In 1978, when workers at a nearby phosphate refinery learned that the ore they processed was contaminated with radioactive dust, Karen Messing, then a new professor of molecular genetics, was called in to help. Unsure of what to do with her discovery that exposure to the radiation was harming the workers and their families, Messing contacted senior colleagues but they wouldn’t help. Neither the refinery company nor the scientific community was interested in the scary results of her chromosome studies. Over the next decades Messing encountered many more cases of workers around the world, factory workers, cleaners, checkout clerks, bank tellers, food servers, nurses, teachers, suffering and in pain without any help from the very scientists and occupational health experts whose work was supposed to make their lives easier. Arguing that rules for scientific practice can make it hard to see what really makes workers sick, in Pain and Prejudice Messing tells the story of how she went from looking at test tubes to listening to workers.

In the Land of the Blind, the one-eyed man is king. Meet the blind, like you've never seen them before: In the year 2020, a nuclear war, perpetrated by a ruling entity known as 'The ARK, ' devastated Earth, laying over half the planet to waste. Today, the 'future' is dark. Every 6 to18 months, a mushroom cloud envelopes one of the world's once-great cities as The ARK seeks to wipe out a newly discovered resistance movement. Its ruler, The Anchor, and his Superiors, are ruthless and rule the world with an iron fist. Until the 'All-Seeing Army, ' committed to a Blind War, rises against them. These soldiers literally can't see and this handicap has become their greatest strength. Not only are their other senses heightened to the point of giving them superior fighting skills, but they also represent the only hope for a human race with a peaceful, true and just vision for the future. Into this clash of titans, a sightless, orphaned boy is thrust. Iori, the eventual One-Eyed King, is kidnapped by this All-Seeing Army and trained for many years as The ARK gets closer to discovering their whereabouts. As commander of the last capable resistance movement on Earth, Iori cannot fail or the entire planet is doomed.

Called by Plutarch "the oldest and greatest of Alexander's successors," Antigonos the One-Eyed (382-301 BC) was the dominant figure during the first half of the Diadoch period, ruling most of the Asian territory conquered by the Macedonians during his final twenty years. Billows provides the first detailed study of this great general and administrator, establishing him as a key contributor to the Hellenistic monarchy and state. After a successful career under Philip and Alexander, Antigonos rose to power over the Asian portion of Alexander's conquests. Embittered by the persistent hostility of those who controlled the European and Egyptian parts of the empire, he tried to eliminate these opponents, an ambition which led to his final defeat in 301. In a corrective to the standard explanations of his aims, Billows shows that Antigonos was scarcely influenced by Alexander, seeking to rule West Asia and the Aegean, rather than the whole of Alexander's Empire.

The colony world of Stittara is no ordinary planet. For the interstellar Unity of the Ceylesian Arm, Stittara is the primary source of anagathics: drugs that have more than doubled the human life span. But the ecological balance that makes anagathics possible on Stittara is fragile, and the Unity government has a vital interest in making sure the flow of longevity drugs remains uninterrupted, even if it means uprooting the human settlements. Offered the job of assessing the ecological impact of the human presence on Stittara, freelance consultant Dr. Paulo Verano jumps at the chance to escape the ruin of his personal life. He gets far more than he bargained for: Stittara's atmosphere is populated with skytubes—gigantic, mysterious airborne organisms that drift like clouds above the surface of the planet. Their exact nature has eluded humanity for centuries, but Verano believes his conclusions about Stittara may hinge on understanding the skytubes' role in the planet's ecology—if he survives the hurricane winds, distrustful settlers, and secret agendas that impede his investigation at every turn.
