One Quarter of Humanity presents evidence about historical and contemporary Chinese population behavior that overturns much of the received wisdom about the differences between China and the West. James Lee and Wang Feng argue that there has been effective regulation of population growth in China through a variety of practices that depressed marital fertility to levels far below European standards, and through the widespread practices of infanticide and abortion. These practices and other distinctive features of the Chinese demographic and social system, they argue, led to a different demographic transition in China from the one that took place in the West.

Humanity S Footprint written by Walter K Dodds and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-02-06 with Science categories.

For the first time in history, humans have exceeded the sustaining capacity of Earth's global ecosystems. Our expanding footprint has tremendous momentum, and the insidious explosion of human impact creates a shockwave that threatens ecosystems worldwide for decades-possibly centuries. Walter K. Dodds depicts in clear, nontechnical terms the root causes and global environmental effects of human behavior. He describes trends in population growth, resource use, and global environmental impacts of the past two centuries, such as greenhouse effects, ozone depletion, water pollution, and species extinctions and introductions. Dodds also addresses less familiar developments, such as the spread of antibiotic resistant genes in bacteria and the concentration of pesticides in the Arctic and other remote ecosystems. He identifies fundamental human activities that have irreversible effects on the environment and draws on recent social science and game theory results to explain why people use more than their share. Past behavior indicates that as resources grow scarce, humans will escalate their use of what remains instead of managing their consumption. Humanity's Footprint paints a lively but ultimately sobering picture of our environmental predicament. Dodds calls for a consilient approach to socioenvironmental restoration that draws on new thinking from across disciplines to develop sustainable solutions to global environmental problems.

Ecological roots of our toubled time are deeper than its economic manifestations. Anguished posterity will look back on this 21st century as the bottleneck century. Bottleneck: Humanitys Impending Impasse was written to show how and why three converging trends have put humankind in much deeper peril than is generally acknowledged. First, there are many more of us inhabiting this planet than it can sustain. Second, technological advances of recent centuries have made gigantic and prodigal our per capita resource appetites and our per capita environmental impacts. Third, even though, as the symbol-using species, we humans conceivably could do better at anticipating future circumstances and planning ahead, our evolutionary heritage together with unanticipated dysfunctions of modern division of labor have kept us too preoccupied with short-term concerns. People today are dependent upon a fantastically intricate web of exchange relations (the market). Even when functioning normallyand not in a collapsed condition, as currentlythis system of relations has a serious and pervasive dehumanizing effect not adequately discerned by economists nor sociologists. Recognition of and adequate adaptation to the deteriorating ecological context of human life has been impeded. Human societies (even our own) are almost certainly going to act in ways that will make an inevitably difficult future unnecessarily worse. Factors analyzed in this book have made people seriously averse to the kind and extent of cooperation our difficult future will require. Together with the basic trio of disturbing trendshumans having become so numerous, so ravenous, and so short-sightedthis has made the nature of todays human prospect far more dire than most policymakers dare admit. It tempts even the wisest and most civic-minded to seek or promote remedial policies that will worsen the real predicament.

Becoming Humanity S Next R Evolution written by Eric Hutchins and has been published by Balboa Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-07-15 with Political Science categories.

Who among us wouldn’t like to have more joy in their lives each day and live in a more vibrant community and peaceful world? From ancient times down to the present day, humanity’s best minds have sought a path by which anyone, anywhere, embracing any point of view and lifestyle could build such a life and, at the same time, help create more vibrant, sustainable, peaceful communities. Now, informed by these elevated minds, Becoming Humanity’s Next R/Evolution offers a practical, scalable way to achieve the life, the communities, and the world each of us wants and humanity desperately needs. The key is not mass conversion to a new religious or social doctrine or the global application of a new physical or digital technology. Rather, it is the daily use of at least two of five simple, proven techniques based on universal principles of human neurophysiology, consciousness, and social interaction. When used by roughly 1 percent of any community, these techniques will begin to measurably elevate the social, economic, and environmental stability of that community. As individuals and communities on every continent and in every culture begin moving forward and upward each day, humanity’s global matrix of suffering and discontent will begin to transform into a matrix of wellbeing and positive achievement. In this next r/evolutionary matrix, we will finally unlock life’s deepest mysteries and begin permanently colonizing the moon, Mars, and perhaps beyond.

Reparation For Victims Of Crimes Against Humanity written by Jo-Anne Wemmers and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-05-30 with Social Science categories.

Each year, countless people fall victim to crimes against humanity. These include widespread occurrences of systematic murder, torture, rape, disappearances, forced deportation and political persecution. Crimes against humanity constitute an attack on human dignity and as such they violate the human rights of the victim, as well as the laws of humanity. In recent years, following the creation of the International Criminal Court, there has been a growing interest in the prosecution of offenders and, in particular, in reparation following crimes against humanity. While such measures are meant to provide justice for victims, victims are often forgotten or lost in legal debates about what constitutes reparation and who is eligible to receive it. This book reaches beyond the boundaries of law and psychology and takes a multidisciplinary approach to the question of reparation for victims of crimes against humanity. Law does not take place in a vacuum and it is important to consider the impact of the law on the psychology of the victim, as well as the legal principles themselves. Herein lies the originality of this book, which bridges the gaps between psychology, victimology, criminology and law and will be of key interest to academics and students engaged in the study of these areas.
