Charlotte, a mid-thirties Long Island woman, has felt so alone since her promising career in neuroscience imploded. But she has an online support group; she has Rachel, a friend who has seen her through the worst of it; and now she also has Peter, a mysterious new boyfriend who has asked that their budding romance remain a total secret. That is why she is too scared to report his disappearance to the authorities when he vanishes without a word. Weeks later, police contact her to make an ID on a body, and she fears the worst for her missing beau. Instead, she arrives at the morgue and feels a terrible relief when she sees a woman she has never met on the table in front of her. But relief is replaced by confusion, then terror, when Charlotte realizes she has become a person of interest. Why did Jane Doe have Charlotte listed as her emergency contact? Was it revenge or a warning? And where exactly does Peter factor into all this? As Charlotte becomes the prime murder suspect, she enters into a race against the clock to find out the truth about the dead woman and the connections they shared. “A funny and moving commentary on that point in a woman's life when everything seems to come into question." —Camille Perri, The New York Times "It's the superb insights and penetrating writing that make this book remarkable... An extraordinary debut." —The Guardian "Enthralling, sharply observed" —Marie Claire "Hilarious... The personal and workplace plots are woven together beautifully. Read, cringe, laugh, relate." —Lenny "In this cutting commentary on workplace toxicity and how its tendrils can strangle relationships, Winter uses humor to illuminate the state of modern work, family, and friendship." —Elle.com "Sassy, sarcastic and sleek, this is a wonderfully brash appraisal of how we live."—Colum McCann One of Elle Magazine's 19 Summer Books That Everyone Will Be Talking About One of Cosmo's Reads for July One of Refinery29's Two New Books to Read in July by Brilliant Debut Authors An irreverent and deeply moving comedy about friendship, fertility, and fighting for one’s sanity in a toxic workplace. Jen has reached her early thirties and has all but abandoned a once-promising painting career when, spurred by the 2008 economic crisis, she takes a poorly defined job at a feminist nonprofit. The foundation’s ostensible aim is to empower women, but staffers spend all their time devising acronyms for imaginary programs, ruthlessly undermining one another, and stroking the ego of their boss, the larger-than-life celebrity philanthropist Leora Infinitas. Jen’s complicity in this passive-aggressive hellscape only intensifies her feelings of inferiority compared to her two best friends—one a wealthy attorney with a picture-perfect family, the other a passionately committed artist—as does Jen’s apparent inability to have a baby, a source of existential panic that begins to affect her marriage and her already precarious status at the office. As Break in Case of Emergency unfolds, a fateful art exhibition, a surreal boondoggle adventure in Belize, and a devastating personal loss conspire to force Jen to reckon with some hard truths about herself and the people she loves most. Jessica Winter’s ferociously intelligent debut novel is a wry satire of celebrity do-goodism as well as an exploration of the difficulty of navigating friendships as they shift to accommodate marriage and family, and the unspoken tensions that can strain even the strongest bonds.

What is happiness? How would you describe it? Is it feeling good or is it the absence of feeling bad? Is it both? Can you control it? Can you trigger and sustain happiness? Happiness may be triggered by different things and may be described differently by different individuals; but I think it's fair to say what we all want is to feel happy. In general, most of us would say good health, a modicum of wealth, and loving relationships would be major components of happi-ness. In short, health, wealth and relationships are all connected to happiness. The search for happiness can be said to drive all human existence. The constant if not consistent release of endor-phins triggered by external stimuli that makes one feel good appears to be the universal goal of our species. Be it trig-gered by love, companionship, affection for family and friends and sports teams, physical activity, humor, food, power, philanthropic pursuits, travel, cars, boats, pets, sex or visual stimuli; I think it is safe to say that the end goal of all human activity is to feel good. A good meal, sharing a warm hug, helping a fellow, receiving a sincere smile, achieving a certain vocational and or economic status that allows one to enjoy the things and experiences that make us feel good drives us, our ancestors and our prodigy forward. It always has and probably always will. That being said, our material achievements almost always ring hollow if we aren't happy. Further, according to a recent Harris Poll, only 1 in 3 Americans consider themselves to be very happy. What does that say about the remaining two-thirds? With these thoughts in mind, a couple of years ago I de-cided to give a go at creating a keynote speech around happiness. I began to talk to people about happiness. I asked if they were happy. The happy people I spoke with had suffi-cient levels of what I call "The Four Factors of happiness" in their lives. The unhappy people simply didn't. Based on this informal research, I created what has become my most popu-lar speech. In fact, each time I delivered this presentation, the majority of the audience would ask to buy a copy of the Happiness Book. But I didn't have a Happiness Book, it was just a speech. So, I decided to turn the Happiness Speech into a book and "The Four Factors of Happiness - Open in case of Emergency" was born. I hope you enjoy it. I hope this book shows how to "Unlock Your Happiness." And when that happens, I hope you share this good news with family and friends. The Four Factors of Happiness Welcome to The Four Factors of Happiness. This is a Happiness Pocketbook designed to carry around and share with others. This is a book about everyday, garden variety, get-up-almost-everyday-feeling-good happiness. It is not a scholarly treatise backed by years and years of empirical re-search. There aren't thousands of test subjects (although we have drawn conclusions from over a hundred or so inter-viewees) from which a 700-hundred page research document has been developed and submitted to the American Psychiat-ric Society or some other august body. The Four Factors of Happiness is simply the result of years of reflection, interaction, observation, conclusions and practice of a happy man. Again, I did perform some objective and subjective research; but there are no tables, charts or graphs that summarize and illustrate my findings. But the research is complete and the results are clear. You can be happy. What I present in these few pages is true and the recommendations do work. You can follow the simple steps I share here to happiness, period. However, I must stress this book is a general guide to happiness. If you have serious physical or mental conditions that limit your ability to be happy, you should consult a trained, licensed professional and address any concerns that may be beyond the scope of this work.

This second edition is a major revision and update of Emergency Response and Emergency Management Law. As the first text to be published on emergency response and emergency management law this book provides an understanding of the legal challenges faced on a daily basis by the front-line troops in emergent situations. The emergency response law section begins with the duty to respond and proceeds through the wide range of legal issues that arise during response. Training accidents, vehicle issues, dispatch, emergency medical services issues, and “Good Samaritan” acts are covered. Additional topics include the standard operating procedures, mutual aid, the incident management system, hazardous materials incidents, OSHA, using volunteer resources, recovery by responders, the rescue doctrine, and the World Trade Center site litigation. The emergency management law section examines the powers of governors, state and local responsibilities, federal emergency management, difficulties in mitigating legal exposure, legal steps for mitigation, potential negligence liability, legal requirements and interpreting/translating assistance, preparedness cases, recovery cases, and the role of the local government attorney before, during, and in the aftermath of a disaster. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Stafford Act and the National Response Framework (NRF) are discussed in great detail. The third section discusses the ethical imperative, homeland security expenditures, policy and legal changes, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the war veterans. At the end of each chapter, questions and problems refer back to the text. These resources highlight the principal issues and serve as a valuable teaching tool for the instructor. This text provides a firm base of legal knowledge for emergency responders, emergency management professionals, and their attorneys.
