The movement toward greater openness represents a change of philosophy, ethos, and government and a set of interrelated and complex changes that transform markets altering the modes of production and consumption, ushering in a new era based on the values of openness: an ethic of sharing and peer-to-peer collaboration enabled through new architectures of participation. These changes indicate a broader shift from the underlying industrial mode of production—a “productionist” metaphysics—to a postindustrial mode of consumption as use, reuse, and modification where new logics of social media structure different patterns of cultural consumption and symbolic analysis becomes a habitual and daily creative activity. The economics of openness constructs a new language of “presuming” and “produsage” in order to capture the open participation, collective co-creativity, communal evaluation, and commons-based production of social and public goods. Information is the vital element in the “new” politics and economy that links space, knowledge, and capital in networked practices and freedom is the essential ingredient in this equation if these network practices are to develop or transform themselves into 'knowledge cultures'. The Virtues of Openness investigates the social processes and policies that foster openness as an overriding educational value evidenced in the growth of open source, open access, and open education and their convergences that characterize global knowledge communities. The book argues that openness seems also to suggest political transparency and the norms of open inquiry, indeed, even democracy itself as both the basis of the logic of inquiry and the dissemination of its results. This is an observational study concerning relationships between personality openness and attitudinal openness. 209 volunteers from two samples, participated in this study. The Ohio sample contained data from 36 self-identified feminists (age 18-65) at the Annual National Women Studies Conference in Akron, Ohio, 1990. The Oregon State university (OSU) sample contained data from 173 undergraduates (age 18-52). Personality openness was assessed by the short form of "Openness to experiences" sub-scale from NEO (Neurosis Extraversion Openness) Personality Inventory (Costa and McCrae, 1985); attitudinal openness was assessed by the Feminism scale (Dempewolff, 197 4). The results suggested that the correlation between openness and feminism was significantly positive across all samples. Feminism attitudes were found to be correlated with course selection, gender, and class standings. On the other hand, personality openness was found to be fairly stable regardless of course selection, age, gender, or class standing. The findings are consistent with a personality construct of openness as a stable disposition, and with feminism as an accumulated attitude that is influenced by experiences, beliefs, and values.

The ‘open society’ has become a watchword of liberal democracy and the market system in the modern globalized world. Openness stands for individual opportunity and collective reason, as well as bottom-up empowerment and top-down transparency. It has become a cherished value, despite its vagueness and the connotation of vulnerability that surrounds it. Scandinavia has long considered itself a model of openness, citing traditions of freedom of information and inclusive policy making.
