In 2018, audiences in the millions are watching opera productions on screens. The twenty-first century has seen a formidable increase in filmed broadcasting of opera from productions in major opera houses and audiences can now watch live or relayed productions from the comfort of their local cinema or home. The increase in broadcasting has heightened the need to talk about acting within opera. Acting on the operatic stage has been a historically contentious issue; although opera prizes the virtuosity of the human singing voice, opera singers have always been critiqued on their ability to match their singing body with relevant acting craft. An examination of the historical relationship between opera and film, as well as opera and acting, establishes the influences and the challenges that opera has had in evolving alongside theatre and screen. A review of opera singing pedagogy, operatic structure, and stagecraft further reveals the inherent differences that set opera aside from other forms of theatre, film, and television. This study then explores changes in acting within contemporary opera broadcasts by assessing criticism and feedback from the opera community. Analysis of filmed productions and the effect of current cinematography and high definition technology provides insight into the effect of media on our perception of stagecraft and raises further questions around genre and artistic agency.

Blessed with one of the great tenor voices of all time, Mario Lanza (1921-1959) rose to spectacular heights in a film, recording, and concert career that spanned little more than a decade. Groomed at the outset for a career on the opera stage, Lanza instead flourished in Hollywood where his films, most notably The Great Caruso, broke box-office records the world over and influenced the careers of countless musicians. To this day, the Three Tenors cite him as an inspiration for their own careers on the classical stage. Lanza's recordings for RCA sold in the millions, and he remains the crossover artist supreme. But his tremendous success was derailed by his self-destructive lifestyle, and by age thirty-eight he was dead, with his extraordinary promise left unfulfilled. Newly revised and updated for its first U.S. edition, Mario Lanza: Singing to the Gods is the definitive account of the remarkable life and times of one of the twentieth century's most beloved singing stars. This richly detailed work also contains a selection of rare photographs, several of which are drawn from Lanza's estate. With the support of Lanza's daughter, Ellisa Lanza Bregman, the tenor's colleagues, and his closest friend, Terry Robinson, Derek Mannering has chronicled a fascinating and unforgettable life. From the fabulous successes of the early MGM years through the disastrous walkouts and cancellations that sent Lanza's career into freefall, Mannering objectively and movingly reveals the story of a great star torn apart by his own troubled psyche and undisciplined lifestyle.

"Confessions of an Opera Singer" is the autobiography of Kathleen Howard, a Metropolitan Opera star from 1916 through 1928. Turning to film acting after her voice broke, Kathleen Howard was also an accomplished writer who served on the staff of Harper's Bazaar. She made her first movie appearance, appropriately cast as an Italian grande dame, in Death Takes a Holiday. Generations of W.C. Fields fans have doted upon Howard's full-blooded portrayals of Fields' virago wife in It's a Gift and The Man on the Flying Trapeze. Toning down her screen mannerisms a bit, Kathleen Howard spent her last decade in films in such supporting roles. "Confessions of an Opera Singer" provides a great overview of what life was like for a Metropolitan Opera star in the early 1900's, and remains a fascinating read.(cover image courtesy of Crystal Church)

A prominent star in both pre-Revolutionary Russia and New York, Lina Cavalieri, described as "the most beautiful woman in the world," was one of the most frequently photographed personalities of her time. The cabaret performer, courtesan, and international star is documented in this, her first English-language biography. Researched from Russian archive sources, the book details her career from her early experiences in cafe-chantant and variety theatre in Paris, London, and St. Petersburg, through a highly successful operatic career in which she sang in many of the world's leading opera houses with such celebrities as Caruso and Ruffo. In 1914, Cavalieri became the first great opera singer to appear in silent movies, making her debut in Manon Lescaut and continuing with a series of successful films. Her life was ended by an Allied air raid in World War II. The book includes excerpts from period reviews, programmes, posters, and many previously unseen photographs. Appendices include a bibliography, filmography, discography, and chronology of stage performances (dates, venues, work, cast, conductor).
