Questi scritti, dedicati al problema dell’educazione e maturati lungo l’arco di un trentacinquennio, offrono ampia testimonianza del graduale distacco di Jung dalla teoria freudiana della sessualità infantile e seguono passo passo l’elaborazione dei capisaldi teorici della psicologia analitica. Il primo saggio della raccolta, Conflitti dell’anima infantile (1910), è infatti ideato come un parallelo al caso del «piccolo Hans» e presenta le fobie e le curiosità in materia sessuale emerse in Anna, una bambina di quattro anni, figlia di un padre «edotto in psicoanalisi» ed educata senza ipocrisie. Dall’analisi rigorosamente freudiana delle conversazioni e dei sogni della «piccola Anna» Jung passerà poi ad orizzonti più ampi e a un pensiero più autonomo e originale nei confronti del maestro. Egli scoprirà anche nelle fantasie infantili la forza ammaliante degli archetipi, nonché la presenza della tendenza inconscia – nella psiche individuale – a elaborare in maniera archetipica i dati della realtà, al punto da trasformare individui di per sé innocui o addirittura insignificanti in dèi e dee, terribili agli occhi dei loro figli: «Dietro ogni singolo padre c’è infatti l’immagine eterna del Padre, e dietro il fuggevole fantasma della propria madre traspare la magica figura della Madre». Una posizione critica nei confronti di Freud e di Adler è assunta da Jung anche nel saggio centrale del volume. Psicologia analitica dell’educazione (1926/1946), riproposto qui nella storica traduzione di Roberto Bazlen: in esso Jung discute ed esemplifica alcuni gruppi di disturbi psichici infantili, tra cui il deficit intellettuale, l’epilessia, la nevrosi e la psicosi, e insieme presenta i fondamenti del suo metodo di indagine dell’inconscio. L’idea basilare esposta anche negli altri scritti nati da conferenze tenute da Jung di fronte a un pubblico di educatori (Il significato dell’inconscio nell’educazione individuale, 1928; Il bambino dotato, 1943 ecc.) è quella dell’educazione permanente, della necessità cioè di educare non tanto il bambino quanto piuttosto l’adulto stesso che del bambino si occupa: Quis custodiet custodes? Come potrebbe educare un genitore che rimane un eterno bambino? o come potrebbe un educatore far emergere la «personalità» del bambino se lui stesso ne è privo? Senza indulgere alla retorica dei grandi principi, Jung afferma che la migliore educazione nasce dall’esempio «Contagioso» di chi riesce, sia pure con sofferenza, a far luce nella propria psiche, accogliendone anche i lati più oscuri, senza essere costretto – come fanno i più – a proiettare i propri complessi inconsci su quello schermo vergine che è ogni bambino.
