This project considers the use of optical linear algebra processors for various applications in real time signal processing. The main thrusts of this project are: algorithms, architectures and applications for linear algebra optical processors. The work reported upon herein concerns two optical linear algebra processors and initial results obtained on each in the solution of very diverse engineering problems. The first system is a space integrating and frequency multiplexed processor applied to an iterative solution of linear algebraic equations for optimal control and to an explicit solution of the heat diffusion equation. The second system is a time and space integrating multi-channel acousto-optic processor applied to a finite element problem solution. The work reported here involves the first laboratory demonstrations of an optical linear algebra processor in a full engineering problem with new work in algorithms also involved. These include: an iterative algorithm linear algebraic equation solution, a nonlinear matrix solution, a frequency-multiplexed analog solution, high accuracy encoded explicit solution, and the first direct high-accuracy linear algebraic equation solution. New partitioning algorithms as well as parallel linear algebra algorithms are advanced and demonstrated on laboratory optical systems for the first time. These results are all significant original contributions in engineering, theory and the applications of linear algebra processors. They also form the framework for future research consideration.

The final report on research into adaptive optical linear algebra processors includes 3 processors. These include: a space integrating frequency-multiplexed processor, a hybrid space and time integrating processor, and a heterodyned linear analog processor. We also address number representation work using twos complement and negative base representation, plus fundamental new concepts such as matrix and bit partitioning. The applications addressed for these various systems include: the solution of linear and nonlinear algebraic equations, partial differential equations, computational fluid dynamics, finite element problems, adaptive signal processing (including adaptive phased array radar processing), and the potential for use in various adaptive neural etc. processing. We also include data to demonstrate and quantify that a high-accuracy digital multiplication by analog convolution optical architecture is superior to a digital processor. Keywords: Iterative Fourier transform processor. (KR).

This report summarizes effort concerning the use of optical linear algebra processors (OLAP's) for adaptive radar signal processing. This effort involved extensive algorithm study, significant software development and optical laboratory hardware and architectural work. Adaptive phased array radar (APAR) relies heavily on the solution of matrix vector equations and eigenvalue/eigenvector problems, both of which are suited for OLAP implementation. This report, presents a new method to estimate the location, center frequency and bandwidth data on noise sources using a new acousto-optic (AO) architecture. Initial test results are provided from computer simulations of the performance of several APAR algorithms implemented on an OLAP. The results indicate that one formulation of the steepest decent algorithm to be preferable for optical implementation. Details are provided about a laboratory OLAP near completion. This handles complex data (needed in APAR) and can provided high accuracy. Details are provided for encoding the data for OLAP and the associated error modeling.

Investigations of techniques for describing and enhancing the accuracy of optical linear algebra processors have been conducted. Significant accomplishments include: (1) showing that error correcting codes can improve processor accuracy and developing criteria which such codes need to possess in order to be suitable for this task; (2) developing a system model incorporating device dynamic range for better quantitative assessment of error correcting code performance; (3) completing a detailed study of the combination of digital partitioning and Modified Multilevel Hamming Codes to achieve high accuracy computation, including scaling properties and effects on processor throughput.

The subject "optical signal processing" can and should include all aspects of optics and signal processing. However, that is too large a scope for a textbook that, like this one, is intended as an introduc tion to the subject at a level suitable for first year graduate students of electrical engineering, physics, and optical engineering. There fore, the subject matter has been restricted. The book begins with basic background material on optics, signal processing, matrix alge bra, ultrasound and SAWs, and CCDs. One might argue about this choice of topics. For example, there already exist very good books on matrix algebra. However, matrix algebra is so important in sig nal processing, especially in connection with devices such as optical matrix processors, that it was felt that a review was essential. Also, the matrix algebra needed for systolic arrays and parallel computing has made great advances in recent years. My original intention was to write a single-volume textbook cov ering most of the fundamental concepts and applications of optical signal processing. However, it soon became apparent that the large amount of material to be included would make publication in a single volume impracticable. Therefore this volume treats the "fundamen tals" and a second volume will appear dealing with devices and applications. This textbook was stimulated by a set of short courses that I have directed and lectured since 1976, as well as regular courses that I have taught at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute since 1974.
