Excerpt from Optical Theories: Based on Lectures Delivered Before the Calcutta University In the year 1912, the University of Calcutta appointed me Reader in Physics and invited me to deliver a course of lectures to its advanced students on Optical Theories, one of the conditions of the appointment being that the lectures should be published after their delivery. The lectures were actually delivered during the months of February and March, 1912, but pressure of other work has prevented me, till now, from seeing them through the press. It has been my object in these lectures to trace the development of Optical Theories from the earliest times to the present day. I have tried to understand and help others (so far as I can) to understand the relation between the different theories, so that one may be clear as to how much is certainly known and how much is mere speculation. In the midst of the bewildering mass of investigations that a student of luminiferous medium is confronted with at the present day, a sketch, such as the one attempted here, describing, with such details as will make the general argument intelligible, how we have been led up to the present position and what that position really is should, as it seems to me, be of considerable use. How far I have succeeded in my attempt, it is for others to judge. To the latest developments of the optical theory including the theory of relativity, no reference has been made here. I hope to deal with them in a later volume, if the present attempt proves successful. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Optical microscopy and associated technologies have advanced rapidly along with laser technology. These techniques have stimulated further development of the optical imaging theory, including 3-dimensional microscopy imaging theory, the theory of imaging with ultrashort pulsed beam illumination and the aberration theory for high numerical-aperture objectives. This book introduces these new theories in modern optical microscopy, providing comparisons with classical imaging as appropriate.

Engineering Optics 2 0 written by Xiangang Luo and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-02-28 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book provides comprehensive information on the history and status quo of a new research field, which we refer to as Engineering Optics 2.0. The content covers both the theoretical basis and the engineering aspects in connection with various applications. The field of Engineering Optics employs optical theories to practical applications in a broad range of areas. However, the foundation of traditional Engineering Optics was formed several hundred years ago, and the field has developed only very gradually. With technological innovations in both the fabrication and characterization of microstructures, the past few decades have witnessed many groundbreaking changes to the bases of optics, including the generalizing of refraction, reflection, diffraction, radiation and absorption theories. These new theories enable us to break through the barriers in traditional optical technologies, yielding revolutionary advances in traditional optical systems such as microscopes, telescopes and lithography systems.

"No one interested in the history of optics, the history of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century physics, or the general phenomenon of theory change in science can afford to ignore Jed Buchwald's well-structured, highly detailed, and scrupulously researched book. . . . Buchwald's analysis will surely constitute the essential starting point for further work on this important and hitherto relatively neglected episode of theory change."—John Worrall, Isis

Understanding Optical Systems Through Theory And Case Studies written by Sijiong Zhang and has been published by SPIE-International Society for Optical Engineering this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017 with SCIENCE categories.

This book explains how to understand and analyze the working principles of optical systems by means of optical theories and case studies. Part I focuses mainly on the theory of classical optics, providing an introduction to geometrical and wave optics, and some concepts of quantum and statistical optics. Part II presents case studies of three practical optical systems that comprise important and commonly used optical elements: confocal microscopes, online co-phasing optical systems for segmented mirrors, and adaptive optics systems. With the theoretical background gained in Part I, readers can apply their understanding of the optical systems presented in Part II to the conception of their own novel optical systems. The book can be used as a text or reference guide for students majoring in optics or physics. It can also be used as a reference for any scientist, engineer, or researcher whose work involves optical systems.

Instrumental Traditions And Theories Of Light written by Xiang Chen and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-07 with Science categories.

An analysis of the optical revolution in the context of early 19th century Britain. Far from merely involving the replacement of one optical theory by another, the revolution also involved substantial changes in instruments and the practices that surrounded them. People's judgements about classification, explanation and evaluation were affected by the way they used such optical instruments as spectroscopes, telescopes, polarisers, photometers, gratings, prisms and apertures. There were two instrumental traditions in this historical period, each of which nurtured a body of practice that exemplified how optical instruments should be operated, and especially how the eye should be used. These traditions functioned just like paradigms, shaping perspectives and even world views. Readership: Scholars and graduate students in the history of science, history of instrument, philosophy of science and science studies. Can also be used as a textbook in graduate courses on 19th century physics.

A History Of Optics From Greek Antiquity To The Nineteenth Century written by Olivier Darrigol and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-01-26 with Science categories.

This book is a long-term history of optics, from early Greek theories of vision to the nineteenth-century victory of the wave theory of light. It shows how light gradually became the central entity of a domain of physics that no longer referred to the functioning of the eye; it retraces the subsequent competition between medium-based and corpuscular concepts of light; and it details the nineteenth-century flourishing of mechanical ether theories. The author critically exploits and sometimes completes the more specialized histories that have flourished in the past few years. The resulting synthesis brings out the actors' long-term memory, their dependence on broad cultural shifts, and the evolution of disciplinary divisions and connections. Conceptual precision, textual concision, and abundant illustration make the book accessible to a broad variety of readers interested in the origins of modern optics.
