BACKGROUND: Clinical weight loss (CWL) (5-10%) combined with aerobic exercise improves insulin sensitivity. The OPTIFAST program is a medically supervised diet for weight loss, however, there is minimal data available on the OPTIFAST diet for improvement in insulin sensitivity. METHODS: Twenty-nine sedentary, overweight, and obese adults (Age: 44.8 ± 9.7 yrs; Weight: 95.6 ± 12.8 kg; BMI: 34.2 ± 3.3 kg/m2) completed a 10-week intervention of supervised aerobic exercise training with an OPTIFAST program to achieve bodyweight loss of [greater-than-or-equal-to]7%. The aerobic exercise training consisted of 300 metabolic minutes (MET min) per week and increased by 50 MET min each week until 700 MET min per week was reached. The OPTIFAST diet included meal-replacement products (~800 kcals per day) and weekly classes about nutrition and behavior modification guided by a registered dietician. A 2-hour oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was performed, which involved ingestion of 75g of dextrose; serum blood samples were obtained at 0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes and analyzed for glucose and insulin levels. Insulin sensitivity was calculated using the Matsuda Index. A normal score for the Matsuda index is [greater-than-or-equal-to]3. RESULTS: After the intervention, Matsuda Index (3.1, p

Don’t waste you time with health and diet Web sites that don’t work The Internet provides unlimited resources that make it easy to learn about various diets, weight-loss programs, and weight-reduction procedures. But with so many sources, which ones can you trust for information that’s safe, accurate, and up-to-date? The Internet Guide to Medical Diets and Nutrition saves you time, trouble, and effort in your search for Web sites that offer the facts about diet programs and nutrition philosophies that meet your health, medical, or religious needs. The Internet Guide to Medical Diets and Nutrition helps you filter out Web sites that offer little, if any, real help in maintaining special diets that address specific diseases (low protein, high calcium, low gluten, hypoallergenic, diabetes, cancer, anemia, etc.), religious or philosophical mandates (Hindu, kosher, vegan, Muslim, macrobiotic, etc.), or commercial regimens (Atkins™, Weight Watchers®, NutriSystem®, etc.), or provide answers to questions about bariatric surgery (gastric bypass, stomach stapling, etc.). This invaluable reference resource teaches you how locate Web sites recommended to you, how to evaluate the information you find there, how to research a particular diet or health concern, how to choose and use the right search engine, the significance of domains in Web addresses, and how to observe proper etiquette when participating in Internet discussion groups. Topics examined in the Internet Guide to Medical Diets and Nutrition include: general diet and nutrition Web sites Web calculators (Body Mass Index, exercise, calories, weight-maintenance, healthy weight) the nutrient content of foods food labels non-surgical weight-loss Web sites caloric restrictions hypnosis weight-loss centers and workshops weight-loss surgery Web sites Web sites for specific medical conditions vegetarianism recipes online discussion groups and much more! The Internet Guide to Medical Diets and Nutrition also includes a glossary of terms and screen captures of important Web sites. The book is a must-have as an everyday resource for consumers with diet and health interests and concerns, and as a reference tool for medical and public libraries.

If there are two subjects that are universally fascinating and rife with controversy, they are sex and fat. Though our culture is obsessed with both, the two commingling are sometimes seen as offensive, obscene, or even grotesque. Fat people are not viewed as sexual beings. Of course, this perception is far from accurate. Fat people have normal and peculiar sex lives, just like everyone else. A compilation of true stories, cultural references, and narrative commentary, Fat Sex: The Naked Truth, tells the honest, and often heroic, heartbreaking, and hilarious experiences of large-size women and men in their romantic, intimate, and sexual relationships. Subjects touched on include heterosexual relationships, gay men and lesbian women, those who have gained and lost a great deal of weight, and the sexual “underground” such as fetishes. Although the people portrayed in Fat Sex: The Naked Truth sometimes face bigotry and experience shame—they are often valiant and live remarkably fulfilling lives. The stories are compelling and told with sensitivity and wit, connecting people on profoundly important aspects of their lives. This book is not just for large-size people. The stories and issues discussed touch all of us, each and every person who has ever experienced the trials and tribulations, as well as the ecstasies, of intimate relationships.
