Women In Industrial And Systems Engineering written by Alice E. Smith and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-09-13 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book presents a diversity of innovative and impactful research in the field of industrial and systems engineering (ISE) led by women investigators. After a Foreword by Margaret L. Brandeau, an eminent woman scholar in the field, the book is divided into the following sections: Analytics, Education, Health, Logistics, and Production. Also included is a comprehensive biography on the historic luminary of industrial engineering, Lillian Moeller Gilbreth. Each chapter presents an opportunity to learn about the impact of the field of industrial and systems engineering and women’s important contributions to it. Topics range from big data analysis, to improving cancer treatment, to sustainability in product design, to teamwork in engineering education. A total of 24 topics touch on many of the challenges facing the world today and these solutions by women researchers are valuable for their technical innovation and excellence and their non-traditional perspective. Found within each author’s biography are their motivations for entering the field and how they view their contributions, providing inspiration and guidance to those entering industrial engineering.

Handbook Of Quantitative Supply Chain Analysis written by David Simchi-Levi and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-05-31 with Business & Economics categories.

The Handbook is a comprehensive research reference that is essential for anyone interested in conducting research in supply chain. Unique features include: -A focus on the intersection of quantitative supply chain analysis and E-Business, -Unlike other edited volumes in the supply chain area, this is a handbook rather than a collection of research papers. Each chapter was written by one or more leading researchers in the area. These authors were invited on the basis of their scholarly expertise and unique insights in a particular sub-area, -As much attention is given to looking back as to looking forward. Most chapters discuss at length future research needs and research directions from both theoretical and practical perspectives, -Most chapters describe in detail the quantitative models used for analysis and the theoretical underpinnings; many examples and case studies are provided to demonstrate how the models and the theoretical insights are relevant to real situations, -Coverage of most state-of-the-art business practices in supply chain management.

Admission Control In Multi Server Systems Under Binary Reward Structure written by Wei Liu and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022 with categories.

We study a multi-server queueing system where a customer is satisfied (and generates a unit revenue) if her queuing time is at almost a given constant. If the queueing time of the admitted customer exceeds this constant, the customer gets served, but is unsatisfied and generates no revenue. Such queueing systems arise when modeling service systems with guaranteed delivery times. A key challenge is how to design an admission control policy to maximize the number of satisfied customers per unit time in the long run, assuming that we can observe the number of customers in the system at any time. We call this the binary reward structure and show that a threshold-type admission policy is optimal. The optimal threshold policy has to be computed numerically. Hence we propose a square-root admission policy to approximate the optimal admission control policy, and compare the performance of these two policies. We derive an analytical upper bound on the performance of optimal admission control policy by deriving an optimal admission policy assuming we have full information over the queueing time of the admitted customers. We compare the heuristic policy, the optimal policy and the upper bound numerically. We also compare the binary reward structure with the more common linear reward structure where the system incurs holding cost per unit queueing time per customer. We also consider a variation where the customers abandon (that is, leave without service) if their queueing time exceeds the given constant.

Handbook Of Markov Decision Processes written by Eugene A. Feinberg and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Business & Economics categories.

Eugene A. Feinberg Adam Shwartz This volume deals with the theory of Markov Decision Processes (MDPs) and their applications. Each chapter was written by a leading expert in the re spective area. The papers cover major research areas and methodologies, and discuss open questions and future research directions. The papers can be read independently, with the basic notation and concepts ofSection 1.2. Most chap ters should be accessible by graduate or advanced undergraduate students in fields of operations research, electrical engineering, and computer science. 1.1 AN OVERVIEW OF MARKOV DECISION PROCESSES The theory of Markov Decision Processes-also known under several other names including sequential stochastic optimization, discrete-time stochastic control, and stochastic dynamic programming-studiessequential optimization ofdiscrete time stochastic systems. The basic object is a discrete-time stochas tic system whose transition mechanism can be controlled over time. Each control policy defines the stochastic process and values of objective functions associated with this process. The goal is to select a "good" control policy. In real life, decisions that humans and computers make on all levels usually have two types ofimpacts: (i) they cost orsavetime, money, or other resources, or they bring revenues, as well as (ii) they have an impact on the future, by influencing the dynamics. In many situations, decisions with the largest immediate profit may not be good in view offuture events. MDPs model this paradigm and provide results on the structure and existence of good policies and on methods for their calculation.
