Psychologists, economists, historians, computer scientists, sociologists, philosophers, and legal scholars explore the conscious choice not to seek information. The history of intellectual thought abounds with claims that knowledge is valued and sought, yet individuals and groups often choose not to know. We call the conscious choice not to seek or use knowledge (or information) deliberate ignorance. When is this a virtue, when is it a vice, and what can be learned from formally modeling the underlying motives? On which normative grounds can it be judged? Which institutional interventions can promote or prevent it? In this book, psychologists, economists, historians, computer scientists, sociologists, philosophers, and legal scholars explore the scope of deliberate ignorance.

The Glory Of Sri Sri Ganesh written by Mahāśvetā Debī and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Fiction categories.

The Glory of Sri Sri Ganesh shows the lives of the underdogs the Lachhimsa, the Rukmanis, the Mohors and the Haroas as a contrast to the lives of their all-powerful overlords the Medinis and Ganeshes. Lachhima, whose leashed bitterness and anger of a lifetime against Medini and Ganesh is liberated at the end of the novel when Ganesh begs her to save his life, decides to save him, but on her own terms. The title of the work itself becomes a tool for subversion in this sprawling novel which takes the reader through a multilayered narrative into the socio-economic malaise of post-independence rural India. Mahasweta Devi s corrosive humour and cryptic style are at their best as she takes on issues of agrarian land relations, inter-caste violence, so-called rural development and position of women in rural India. Considered one of Mahasweta Devi s most important works, this novel, written in 1981, appeared shortly after her seminal Chotti Munda and His Arrow. The hope of liberation contained in Chotti Munda continues in this book. As the author says, Chotti Munda talked of the dream of the dispossessed tribals uniting in struggle with the equally marginalized low caste communities; while this novel shows how being landless and being born low caste is almost inevitably linked in India . Mahasweta Devi is one of India s foremost writers. Her powerful fiction has won her recognition in the form of the Sahitya Akademi (1979), Jnanpith (1996) and Ramon Magsaysay (1996) awards, the title of Officier del Ordre Des Arts Et Des Lettres (2003) and the Nonino Prize (2005) amongst several other literary honours. She was also awarded the Padmasree in 1986, for her activist work among dispossessed tribal communities. Ipsita Chanda is a translator who also teaches Comparative Literature in Jadavpur University.

Educators today teach in a range of formats, from traditional face-to-face courses to Web-assisted courses in physical classrooms to entirely online courses in which the teacher and students never meet in person. The pressure to integrate teaching with information technology is strong, and more and more educational institutions are offering blended courses and distance-education learning options. The essays in this collection illuminate the realities of teaching language and literature courses online. Contributors present snapshots of their experiences with online pedagogies, realizing that, just as this year's technology writes over last year's, the approaches and teaching tools they have pioneered will also be obscured by future innovations. At the same time, the volume describes models that first-time teachers of online courses will find useful and provides extensive insights into online education for those who are experienced in teaching blended and open-source courses. The volume begins with an overview of online education in the fields of literature and language and then offers case studies of particular technologies used in specific courses. Subjects extend from Old English and ancient world literature to Shakespeare and modern poetry, and languages include Aymara, Chinese, English as a second language, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish. Contributors describe using multimedia Web sites, cyberplay and gaming, bulletin boards, chat rooms, blogs, wikis, natural language processing, podcasting, course management systems, annotated electronic editions, text-analysis tools, and open-source applications. They show that online pedagogies often have surprising capabilities--such as transforming a Web-based environment into an intimate social community spanning institutions and oceans, saving endangered languages, and rescuing isolated communities and individuals who have no other educational lifeline.

Providing an introduction to the way health policies are made and who influences them, this book combines a comparative analytical framework for understanding health policy with a wide range of examples of actual policy choices from North and South. In its exploration of power, the book focuses on the role of the state in the context of interest groups and other actors. It looks at the nature of political systems and the extent to which participation is encouraged. It also explores issues of global influence, asking how far the North shapes health policies in the South. In its exploration of processes, the book asks how issues get on to the policy agenda, what the processes of formulation are and who the influential actors are.
