„Le Guin scrie despre oameni rupti de forte mai puternice decat ei si care se lupta cu curaj pentru a ramane intregi.“ The New York Times Book Review Adunate pentru prima oara intr-un singur volum cele trei nuvele din lumea HAINISH preced romanul multi-premiat al Ursulei K. Le Guin Mana stanga a intunericului. Razboiul intergalactic ameninta planeta Fomalhaut II in Lumea lui Rocannon. O tanara nascuta inaintea timpului ei viziteaza cetatea departe-nascutilor in Planeta Exilului. In Orasul Iluziilor un strain este gasit ratacind in padure si salvat de sateni. Acum soarta a doua lumi sta in mainile lui. Cartile Ursulei K. Le Guin parte din ciclul HAINISH sunt opere de sine statatoare si pot fi citite individual. Dar publicarea acestor trei nuvele intr-un singur volum ii da cititorului sansa de a le parcurge ca o serie de a descoperi conexiunile dintre temele abordate de scriitoare. Pline de aventura si suspans toate cele trei povesti au in comun acelasi motiv: singuratatea strainului separat de cultura lui pierderea identitatii si exilul intr-o alta societate. "

'She is unique. She is legend' THE TIMES 'A tour de force' EVENING STANDARD 'A wonderfully mordant analyst of human weakness' Martin Amis Earth, like the rest of the Known Worlds, has fallen to the Shing. Scattered here and there, small groups of humans live in a state of semi-barbarism. They have lost the skills, science and knowledge that had been Earth's in the golden age of the League of Worlds, and whenever a colony of humans tries to rekindle the embers of a half-forgotten technology, the Shing, with their strange, mindlying power, crush them out. There is one man who can stand against the malign Shing, but he is an alien with amber eyes and must first prove to paranoid humanity that he himself is not a creature of the Shing.

An examination of childhood trauma and its surreptitious, debilitating effects by one of the world's leading psychoanalysts. Never before has world-renowned psychoanalyst Alice Miller examined so persuasively the long-range consequences of childhood abuse on the body. Using the experiences of her patients along with the biographical stories of literary giants such as Virginia Woolf, Franz Kafka, and Marcel Proust, Miller shows how a child's humiliation, impotence, and bottled rage will manifest itself as adult illness—be it cancer, stroke, or other debilitating diseases. Never one to shy away from controversy, Miller urges society as a whole to jettison its belief in the Fourth Commandment and not to extend forgiveness to parents whose tyrannical childrearing methods have resulted in unhappy, and often ruined, adult lives. In this empowering work, writes Rutgers professor Philip Greven, "readers will learn how to confront the overt and covert traumas of their own childhoods with the enlightened guidance of Alice Miller."

WINNER OF THE DUBLIN LITERARY AWARD AND THE LOS ANGELES TIMES BOOK PRIZE FOR FICTION Based on Cărtărescu's own experience as a teacher, Solenoid submerges us in the mundane details of a diarist's life and spirals into an existential account of history, philosophy and mathematics. Grounded in the reality of communist Romania, it grapples with frightening health care, the absurdities of the education system and the struggles of family life, while investigating other universes and forking paths. In a surreal journey like no other, we visit a tuberculosis preventorium, an anti-death protest movement, a society of dream investigators and a minuscule world of dust mites living on a microscope slide. Combining fiction with autobiography and history, Solenoid searches for escape routes through the alternate dimensions of life and art, as various monstrous realities erupt within the present. PRAISE FOR SOLENOID: 'Mircea Cărtărescu is no longer writing novels. He is officiating a cult' TLS 'An engrossing study of a cerebral antihero, who longs to escape his earthly existence' New York Times 'Extraordinary and baroque... A bravura performance' The Nation 'An anti-novel that for all purposes should not exist but still does despite itself, thanks to the overpowering talents of the author and the translator' Anton Hur 'Surreal and viscerally political' FT 'Nothing short of remarkable' Los Angeles Review of Books 'A masterwork of Kafkaesque strangeness, brilliantly conceived and written' Kirkus Reviews

Emilia, a pensioner in northern Romania, is forced to confront the nostalgic illusions she nurtures as a reaction to the grim post-communist present when her daughter, now living in Canada, telephones urging her not to vote for the former communists in upcoming elections. Determined to discover in her own mind why 'things were better back then,' she explores her memories of growing up in an impoverished village and of her life as a factory worker in the town. But ironic tension grows as the reader glimpses between the lines how nothing was what it seemed in Ceaușescu's Romania. Interspersed among Emilia's memories are fantastical, hilarious anecdotes about the dictator, told by a factory foreman who will turn out to have been a secret police informer. I'm a Commie! is a subtle and humane novel about self-deception, but also about the ways in which a totalitarian state twisted ordinary lives.

Variation And Change In Spanish written by Ralph Penny and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-05-20 with Foreign Language Study categories.

This book applies recent theoretical insights to trace the development of Castilian and Latin American Spanish from the Middle Ages onwards, through processes of repeated dialect mixing both within the Iberian Peninsula and in the New World. The author contends that it was this frequent mixing which caused Castilian to evolve more rapidly than other varieties of Hispano-Romance, and which rendered Spanish particularly subject to levelling of its linguistic irregularities and to simplification of its structures. These two processes continued as the language extended into and across the Americas. These processes are viewed in the context of the Hispano-Romance dialect continuum, which includes Galician, Portuguese and Catalan, as well as New World varieties. The book emphasises the subtlety and seamlessness of language variation, both geographical and social, and the impossibility of defining strict boundaries between varieties. Its conclusions will be relevant both to Hispanists and to historical sociolinguists more generally.
