Hawes décrit dans un premier temps, jour après jour, heure par heure, la marche de la division Das Reich qui réduisit le village en cendres après en avoir assassiné les habitants. Qui commanda le massacre? Pourquoi? Le livre replace la tragédie dans le contexte particulier du Limousin et de la période qui précède le débarquement. Un second volet est consacré au déroulement du procès, près de neuf ans après les faits. Parmi les inculpés, sept seulement étaient Allemands. Les quatorze autres, tous Alsaciens, avaient, à l'exception d'un seul, été intégrés de force parmi les SS – des malgré-nous. Des vingt-et-un, deux furent condamnés à mort et les autres à des peines d'emprisonnement allant de cinq à huit ans. Les Alsaciens étaient-ils victimes ou coupables ? Et que dire de l'absence des officiers SS au tribunal ? Quelques années après la première édition de ce livre, l'exploitation des archives de l'ancienne RDA a permis de retrouver six anciens SS soupçonnés d'avoir participé au massacre. Aux États-Unis, Douglas W. Hawes a pu lire le rapport et le mémoire, resté confidentiel, d'Ector O. Munn, chargé par Harry Trumann d'enquêter sur place trois mois après les événements. Relying on multiple eye witness accounts and thorough research in French, American and Rsistance archives, the author describes in Part I, hour by hour, the massacre on June 10, 1944, by the Waffen-SS Division Das Reich, of 642 men, women and children in the village of Oradour-sur-Glane and the destruction of the village.. Who ordered the massacre? Why ? The book puts the tragedy in the context of the D-Day Landing and the period that precedes it. Part II is devoted to the conduct of the trial nearly nine years later. Of the 21 accused, only 7 were Germans. The others, all French/Alsatians, had mostly been forcibly inducted into the SS. None were officers. Were the Alsatians victims or murderers? And why were there no officers in the courtroom?

This is the first systematic pan-European study of the hundreds of thousands of non-Germans who fought - either voluntarily or under different kinds of pressures - for the Waffen-SS (or auxiliary police formations operating in the occupied East). Building on the findings of regional studies by other scholars - many of them included in this volume - The Waffen-SS aims to arrive at a fuller picture of those non-German citizens (from Eastern as well as Western Europe) who served under the SS flag. Where did the non-Germans in the SS come from (socially, geographically, and culturally)? What motivated them? What do we know about the practicalities of international collaboration in war and genocide, in terms of everyday life, language, and ideological training? Did a common transnational identity emerge as a result of shared ideological convictions or experiences of extreme violence? In order to address these questions (and others), The Waffen-SS adopts an approach that does justice to the complexity of the subject, adding a more nuanced, empirically sound understanding of collaboration in Europe during World War II, while also seeking to push the methodological boundaries of the historiographical genre of perpetrator studies by adopting a transnational approach.

Several instances of war crimes trials are familiar to all scholars, but in order to advance understanding of the development of international criminal law, it is important to provide a full range of evidence from less-familiar trials. This book therefore provides an essential resource for a more comprehensive overview, uncovering and exploring some of the lesser-known war crimes trials that have taken place in a variety of contexts: international and domestic, northern and southern, historic and contemporary. It analyses these trials with a view to recognising institutional innovations, clarifying doctrinal debates, and identifying their general relevance to contemporary international criminal law. At the same time, the book recognises international criminal law's history of suppression or sublimation: What stories has the discipline refused to tell? What stories have been displaced by the ones it has told? Has international criminal law's framing or telling of these stories excluded other possibilities?
