"This report provides the results of the Oral Health Survey of Inuit conducted by the Office of the Chief Dental Officer of Canada in conjunction with the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami and the Government of Nunatsiavut, Department of Health and Social Development (Newfoundland and Labrador); Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated (Nunavut); and the Inuvialuit Region Corporation (Northwest Territories). It provides estimates of the burden of oral health conditions as of 2008-2009 across all areas of Canada's north, except Nunavik. Although the Region of Nunavik chose not to participate in the survey, it is important to mention that they are in full support of the Inuit Oral Health Survey 2008-2009 results. Following the standards of the oral health module of the Canadian Health Measures Survey (OHM-CHMS), trained dentist-examiners examined 1216 Inuit ranging in age from 3 to 40+ years.

This collaborative work provides a detailed snapshot of child oral health in Australia. In doing so, it describes the levels of dental caries and its components, dental fluorosis and other oral health conditions and how they vary by social characteristics. It also describes protective factors such as toothbrushing, the use of fluoridated toothpastes and making dental visits. The 2012–14 National Child Oral Health Study (NCOHS) was a cross-sectional study of the child population aged 5 to 14 years in Australia. A total of 24,664 children from 841 participating schools completed the study. The study sample was selected in a complex multistage, stratified sampling design. Sophisticated weighting procedure was employed to adjust for variations in probabilities of selection and response rates. Therefore, this report presents estimates as representative of child oral health in Australia. Information was collected via a parental questionnaire and a detailed dental examination by trained dental professionals.

Oral health disparities are profound worldwide, and they affect the quality of life of individuals of all age groups. Disparities in oral health are seen in racial and ethnic minorities, at different socioeconomic levels and due to differences in environment and cultural factors. Several determinants of oral health have been identified at the population, community, family and individual levels. These determinants represent a complex interplay of the social, biological, cultural and economic factors that in turn affect the oral health behaviors, environmental exposures, health care utilization. To date, biological factors related to oral diseases have received much attention in oral health research; whilst social and cultural determinants have just started to receive recognition for their role in oral disease development and progression. This research highlights that interventions designed to reduce disparities should adopt a multi-level approach in order to identify the modifiable mechanisms and target all determinants of oral health disparities. In this Research Topic, we will focus on the role of social, environmental and cultural factors in the development and progression of oral diseases, their role in oral health disparities and interventions focusing on these factors to improve oral health and reduce disparities.

Objective: To determine the relationship between Indigenous mothers' oral health status and severe early childhood caries (S-ECC) in their children and to examine whether mothers' oral health-related self-efficacy (OHSE) mediates this association. Methods: The study included 544 Indigenous pregnant women in Canada, who underwent a clinical examination and completed a survey. Their children underwent a clinical examination when they were 2 years old. Results: After adjusting for mother's age, smoking status, area of residence (on First Nations reserve or off reserve) and OHSE using logistic regression, Gingival Index (Odds Ratio 3.2, 95% Confidence Interval 1.5-6.6) and Debris Index (OR 2.4, 95% CI 1.3-4.7) were significantly associated with S-ECC. In the mediation analysis, maternal oral health status measures were negatively associated with OHSE and had a direct effect on S-ECC. Conclusions: Clinical normative measures of Indigenous mothers' oral health status were significant determinants of S-ECC in their toddlers.

The purpose of this study is to compare the dental health status of two groups of Manitoba Native children, six and thirteen years of age, to studies of Manitoba White children of similar ages, and to determine whether whether any differences found are due to the often isolated rural environment in which they commonly live. The populations included in this study consist of both Native and White children living in rural communities in Manitoba, and a sample of White children living in an urban environment. The first part of the study is a dental survey of the children belonging to the Swampy Cree Tribe and living on six reserves close to The Pas, in northwest Manitoba. The second part of the study looks at the Native children in central and northeastem Manitoba, primarily Ojibwa, who were treated by the Manitoba Children's Dental Program. Most studies of Canadian Native children have shown very poor overall oral health, with a dental caries rate three to four times higher than the general population. This study attempts to determine whether this problem of rampant decay is primarily the result of limited access to dental care found in the rural environment. The results of this study indicate that: first, in most measures of dental health status, there is a significant difference in the quality of dental health of Manitoba children at six and thirteen years of age, that follows a rural-urban, as well as an Native-White distribution. Second, there is a clear urban-rural dichotomy in the extent to which the treatment needs of Manitoba children are being met. The rural White children are only slightly better off than the rural Native children, and both are significantly worse off that are urban White children. There is more of a difference in the 6-year olds between the urban and rural White children than there is for 13-year-olds. These results are consistent with the results of previous studies in which Native and rural children had significantly greater caries rates and fewer of their treatment needs were met, especially for younger children, 5-6 years of age. The implications of this research are that perhaps this is the appropriate framework within which to evaluate the delivery of dental health care, and perhaps health care in general, at least within Canada, a country in which the rural population is, for the most part, far more removed from the urban centres than is true of virtually any other country. Most of us presume that the general health status of Canadian Indians and Inuit is well below that of the predominantly White population, and that this is part of the overall pattern of neglect that has been accorded historically to Indian and Inuit people. What may not be so clear is the extent to which simple remoteness from urban centres of treatment may be an equally important variable. Certainly, there is evident need to improve the standards of health care for Canada's Native peoples, but this need should be assessed within the broader context of an urban-rural framework, rather than as simply one of ethnic neglect.

Periodontology, or Periodontics, is the specialty of oral healthcare that concerns supporting structures of teeth, diseases, and conditions that affect them. The supporting tissues are known as the periodontium, which includes the gingiva (gums), alveolar bone, cementum, and the periodontal ligament. Oral biology deals with the microbiota and their interaction within the oral region. Research in oral health and systemic conditions concerns the effect of various systemic conditions on the oral cavity and conversely helps to diagnose various systemic conditions.
