This book provides a wide-ranging update on the associations between oral infections and general health. Detailed consideration is given to the underlying mechanisms or pathways linking oral infections to general health, including metastatic spread of infection from the oral cavity as a result of transient bacteremia, metastatic injury from the effects of circulating oral microbial toxins, and metastatic inflammation caused by immunological dysfunction induced by oral microorganisms. The book also reviews the complex structure and development of oral biofilms in health and disease, and the molecular tools that are currently available for their analysis. The advantages and limitations of such techniques, as well as their impact on the future of diagnostics, prevention and patient management, are discussed.

The relationship of oral disease to overall disease is certainly not a new concept. For centuries, the role of oral infection and inflammation in contributing to diseases elsewhere in the body has been studied and reported. During the last few decades, a series of intriguing reports from many countries have increased the current interest in the role of oral health and disease in contributing to general health and systemic conditions. Is it possible that oral and periodontal disease is a risk factor for cardiovascular and other systemic diseases? Since this question was first posed, a phenomenal body of work has been directed at understanding how oral periodontal disease might affect distant sites and organs and, thus, have an effect on overall health. Recent studies of the human microbiome using DNA sequencing technologies have revealed new insights into the possible mechanisms that help to explain how oral infections can occur in distinct sites such as atheromas, the colon, and reproductive tissues.

Oral infections mainly affect oral health, but can also affect people's general health in several ways. This book gives an overview of the scientific evidence for linkages between oral infections and other systemic diseases. Much research has been carried out to find the most plausible reasons for associations and possible causal mechanisms in this regard. The last 20-30 years have opened up the field of the infection hypothesis in cardiovascular disease that was first introduced in the nineteenth century. The book also provides a short overview of oral infections and symptoms due to systemic diseases.

Excerpt from The Pathology of Dental Infections and Its Relation to General Diseases In the year 1905 a committee of dentists of Toronto was formed to communicate with the manufacturers of the tooth preparations then on the market to ascertain the composition of each, because they believed that a dentist should not recommend any preparation of which he did not know the ingredients. Finding there was no satisfaction to be obtained in this direction as to the formulæ of these preparations, arrangements were made to have them chemically analyzed, thus ascertaining that in most of the samples were ingredients which should not exist in an ideal mouth preparation. The Canadian Oral Prophylactic Association was then organized to have manufactured preparations which should contain nothing which was not beneficial. After much consideration and consultation a paste was manufactured under the registered name "Hutax" (meaning mouth health). Later a powder was placed on the market, and last a tooth brush. These articles are the result of frequent consultations with many of the leading practitioners, not only in Toronto, but of the Dominion of Canada and the United States. The shareholders of the Canadian Oral Prophylactic Association originally subscribed$5.00 each for "the good of the cause," and the charter of incorporation provides that the profits are to be expended for educational and philanthropic purposes, such as (a) bringing prominently before the public important information, which the dentist has, as to the influence of conditions of the mouth on the general health. (b)Care of the teeth of the poor, (c)Assisting the indigent in the profession of dentistry. Thus no director or shareholder receives directly or indirectly any dividends or other remuneration. Every dentist may recommend "Hutax" preparations with a confident consciousness that there is nothing better on the market, and that the profits will be utilized for the good of the profession and of humanity.
