Shaping Orange County explores the untold stories of America's sixth largest county, a sun-dappled paradise cooled by ocean breezes, defined by movies and television and transformed by decades of steady growth and economic prosperity. It is the place where Disneyland invented the international theme park industry, where disgraced former president Richard Nixon was born, lived and is buried, and where the always changing American Dream seems very real and very attainable.Once a part of America's old west, Orange County was the home of 19th century cattle drives and sheep-grazing, cowboy life-styles that all but vanished in the romantic 20th century era of oranges and oil. Over time, citrus groves and petroleum production faded into aerospace and electronics industries, then into 21st century high-tech enterprises, cutting-edge life science companies, medical device firms and low-paying service jobs. Residential real estate development, some of it posh and elegant, some of it now gritty and struggling, has been relentless. The sunny climate also attracted a few shady characters. A whiff of corruption is never far from great wealth or great success. Orange County has had more than its share of rogues and rascals, the dreamers and doers who created a new kind of place to live, work and raise a family.Shaping Orange County looks unsparingly into the dark corners of the county's colorful past, its quirky hidden history, and the county's remarkable successes.

Relatively small in size among California's counties at 789 square miles, Orange County supports one of the nation's largest county populations: three million. Yet this county is surprisingly rich in its diversity of natural elements. Bounded all around by a spectacular seacoast and rambling hills, it contains a portion of Cleveland National Forest, including two mile-high mountain peaks. Orange County has numerous canyons, dramatic in looks and legend, as well as the Santa Ana River with its seasonal branching tributaries. Yet extensive acreage within this forward-looking county is being permanently preserved as wilderness parks, preserves, and conservancies as governmental and private agencies respond to the ecological challenges of the future.

A Civil War historian recounts the first battle between Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee—a bloody and horrifying conflict in the Wilderness of Virginia. Known simply as the Wilderness, soldiers called the seventy square miles of dense Virginian forest one of the “waste places of nature” and “a region of gloom.” Yet here, in the spring of 1864, the Civil War escalated to a new level of horror. Ulysses S. Grant, commanding all Federal armies, opened the Overland Campaign with a vow to never turn back. Robert E. Lee, commanding the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, moved into the Wilderness to block Grant’s advance. Thick underbrush made for difficult movement and low visibility. And these challenges were terrifyingly compounded by the outbreak of fires that burned casualties and left both sided blinded in a sea of smoke. Driven by desperation, duty, confusion, and fire, soldiers on both sides marveled that anyone might make it out alive. “This, viewed as a battleground, was simply infernal,” a Union soldier later said. Another called it “Hell itself.”

Unearth the Mysteries of Those Who Lie Beneath the Oldest Graveyards in the Golden State In each of California’s 58 counties there are hundreds (and hundreds) of cemeteries, burial sites, and abandoned graveyards, some tucked away behind storefronts or under paved streets. “Burying grounds” are found in neighborhoods, pastures, fields, downtowns, backyards, or deep in the woods. In What Lies Beneath: California Pioneer Cemeteries and Graveyards, author Gail L. Jenner exhumes the stories of these pioneers buried beneath the soil, pavement, and rocks, or under the waters of this state. This guide also provides descriptions of headstone features and symbols, and demystifies the burial traditions used by the Native Americans, Spanish, Chinese immigrants, and early California pioneers and settlers.
