This volume contains a selection of papers from the 4th International Conference on Language Variation in Europe (ICLaVE 4), which was held at the University of Cyprus from June 17th–19th 2007. The variety of theoretical frameworks and methodological perspectives (from Generative Grammar, Word Grammar, Government Phonology, Optimality Theory and Distributed Morphology to quantitative, Labovian and ethnographic approaches to variation and change, real and apparent time studies, phonetic analysis and metatheoretical papers on quantitative analysis), as well as the sheer number of linguistic varieties examined, attest both to the breadth and scope of the conference and to its status as a meeting-place for synchronic and diachronic linguistic description and theoretical exploration. One of the major themes running through the volume is the explicit concern with methodological refinement. Almost all the contributions address issues of methodology in various aspects of data collection and analysis, be they questionnaire surveys and interview data, spoken or written corpora, real- and apparent-time studies, dialect atlases and maps, statistical models or software. Alongside methodological issues, and especially with regard to the treatment of historical data, many of the papers in the volume explicitly address theoretical issues, for example the relative weighting of linguistic/systemic, cognitive and discourse factors in the exploration of language variation and change.

This book of new work by leading international scholars considers developments in the study of diachronic linguistics and linguistic theory, including those concerned with the very definition of language change in the biolinguistic framework, parametric change in a minimalist conception of grammar, the tension between the observed gradual nature of language change and the binary nature of parameters, and whether syntactic change can be triggered internally or requires the external stimuli produced by phonological or morphological change or through language contact. It then tests their value and applicability by examining syntactic change at different times and in a wide range of languages, including German, Chinese, Dutch, Sanskrit, Egyptian, Norwegian, old Italian, Portuguese, English, the Benue-Kwa languages of Niger-Congo, Catalan, Spanish, and old French. In de late middeleeuwen deden vrije mannen overal in Noordwest-Europa als dienstplichtigen mee aan raids, belegeringen en veldslagen. Omdat ze als amateurs te boek staan, heeft de militaire geschiedschrijving tot dusver weinig oog voor hun inzet gehad. Dit boek wil hierin verandering brengen. Het gaat over de volksweerbaarheid en volksbewapening in Friesland tussen 1480 en 1560, een tijdvak waarin vaak en fel is gevochten in de Noordelijke Nederlanden. Hans Mol beschrijft de samenstelling en ontwikkeling van de Friese boeren- en burgermilities. Hij onderzoekt tevens waarom de zelfverdediging van de Friezen uiteindelijk faalde bij hun streven om hun politieke autonomie te bewaren. Hoofdbron voor deze studie is een omvangrijke serie monsterlijsten uit 1552 die voor zes steden en veertien Friese plattelandsdistricten zijn overgeleverd. Ze bevatten per dorp of wijk uitvoerige beschrijvingen van alle weerplichtige mannen met hun namen en uitrusting. Het boek bevat een editie hiervan.
