I write poetry that uses ordinary language but still has the capacity to hold sophisticated ideas. Language is meant for communication and is usually lost somewhere within the confines of the modern poet. My poetry's profound in many instances, but it never tries to elude the grasp of the reader's mind. I write for the ordinary person. And that's why I write ordinary poetry with extraordinary ideas. I write that way so that those who might think they're just an ordinary person will realize the truth. I write so that the ordinary may realize that they're extraordinary, because that's the truth of who they are. That's the truth that most have unfortunately forgotten throughout the years. I write ordinary poems for extraordinary people in these ordinary times.

Kenneth Steven is deeply rooted in the landscape of his native Highland Scotland and in his love of the Celtic Christian story. Natural and spiritual images abound and the interplay between them makes his poetry at once local and universal, the small and familiar revealing a glimpse of a vast and hidden divine reality This new collection includes poems based on everyday sights and experiences – autumn mornings, flights of birds, mountains and lochs, sunrise and moonrise colouring the landscape, creatures of the day and night making their shy appearances, memories of childhood and the exchanges of love. In addition, there are poems inspired by ancient abbeys and symbols of faith and sequences for Christmas and Easter.

Finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize: “Thought-provoking, poignant, brutal, amusing, and always beautiful.”—Elizabeth Berg Hurrying through errands, attending a dying mother, helping her own child down the playground slide, the speaker in these poems wonders: what is the difference between the self and the soul? The secular and the sacred? Where is the kingdom of heaven? And how does one live in Ordinary Time—during those apparently unmiraculous periods of everyday trouble and joy?

Ordinary Time written by Paul Mariani and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-01-15 with Poetry categories.

With Ordinary Time, his eighth collection, the distinguished poet and biographer Paul Mariani shares a vision of the world in which the sacred and the quotidian mingle, sometimes quietly and sometimes with revelatory force. These poems treat not only the social and historical issues of the time--the poor, the marginalized, the casualties of war, the forgotten--but the importance of family and friends, especially in those moments we all share of illness and desolation. What saves us is not only beauty but the wit and humor to see the reader through. A grandfather now, Mariani celebrates a new generation and remembers the dead. If the poems often deal with the ordinary--everything from memories of New York City back in the 1940s to the Mississippi Delta and the Canadian Rockies, to Sweden, the Baltic Sea, and finally Jerusalem--they do so under the shadow of the sacred, which these poems keep reaching out to with word after word after Word.

ONE OF PUBLISHERS WEEKLY'S TOP 10 POETRY BOOKS OF FALL 2017 NPR'S MOST ANTICIPATED POETRY BOOKS OF 2017 A striking, full-length debut collection from Virgin Islands-born poet Nicole Sealey The existential magnitude, deep intellect, and playful subversion of St. Thomas-born, Florida-raised poet Nicole Sealey’s work is restless in its empathic, succinct examination and lucid awareness of what it means to be human. The ranging scope of inquiry undertaken in Ordinary Beast—at times philosophical, emotional, and experiential—is evident in each thrilling twist of image by the poet. In brilliant, often ironic lines that move from meditation to matter of fact in a single beat, Sealey’s voice is always awake to the natural world, to the pain and punishment of existence, to the origins and demises of humanity. Exploring notions of race, sexuality, gender, myth, history, and embodiment with profound understanding, Sealey’s is a poetry that refuses to turn a blind eye or deny. It is a poetry of daunting knowledge.

Maps And Transcripts Of The Ordinary World written by Kathryn Cowles and has been published by Milkweed Editions this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-03-10 with Poetry categories.

This “innovative” poetry collection “uses text and image to explore the strangeness inherent in everyday experience” (Publishers Weekly). “I take seven photographs turning / in a circle, a panorama, / but how will I place them hanging / on a wall back home? Something already slipping,” Kathryn Cowles writes. These poems surround a central question: how much of a moment is captured by the mechanisms we use to describe it? How much of the shore, the birds, the feeling? In pursuit of an answer, Cowles leads readers through a sequence of distinct landscapes (islands, plains, mountains, oceans), puzzling over and embracing the valley between literature and lived experience. Along the way, Cowles’s language is light but recursive, rotating around beloved places: a new house, a garden, a seemingly endless plane ride, a battery-operated spit of lamb, a photograph of a battery-operated spit of lamb, dogs, Sue, Ohio. This collection defamiliarizes and refamiliarizes the “actual world,” while navigating toward the clear and substantial stuff of living. Arresting on both visual and textual levels, Maps and Transcripts of the Ordinary World isa collection that lingers in memory and place, in the unsettled distance between reality and its transcriptions. “Deftly shows that as we struggle to transform into language what we see and hear and feel, the results are inevitably incomplete; there’s a gap between what we want to say and what we actually manage.” —Library Journal “The need to catalog, to document, and to mourn are all active forces in Cowles’s poems . . . a work of grappling with the representational and the real and the thin boundaries between them.” —Colorado Review

Kathleen Watkins has always loved poetry. From the days she had to learn it line by line at school to performing it at gatherings of family and friends, and as part of her stage show with her husband, the broadcaster Gay Byrne - it has been and still is a constant in her life. This personal, curated collection of favourite poems from Kathleen is a small but perfectly formed anthology, covering the best of Irish poets including Brendan Kennelly, Padraic Colum, Seamus Heaney, Rita Ann Higgins, Carol Ann Duffy, Eavan Boland, Patrick Kavanagh, Mary Dorcey, WB Yeats, Francis Ledwidge and Paula Meehan. Accessible and recognisable, the poems cover a range of emotions and experiences. Often concerning the family, relationships and life in the home, they are a celebration of the extraordinary moments that can be found in the everyday events of our daily lives, and are to be savoured, read aloud and enjoyed by all.
