In 1963 the first Symposium on "Ores in Sediments" took place as part of an Inter national Sedimentological Congress. At the end of that first Symposium. the group then assembled adopted a resolution printed in the book which resulted from it (AM STUTZ. 1964, p. 7). and points (3). (4) and (5) read as follows: (3) The group considers the integration of sedimentology in any study of ore deposits in sediments essential to a correct interpretation. A study of the role of sedi mentary processes, including diagenesis, is an important field in pure as well as in applied research on the genesis of mineral deposits. (4) In particular. the group also considers the knowledge of sedimentary rocks and processes (in regard to both. the fabric and the geochemical detail) a prerequi site for the understanding of subsequent metamorphic processes and their pos sible role in the deformation and reconstitution of mineral deposits and host rocks. (5) The group suggests that similar symposia could with advantage be held at future Congresses of the International Association of Sedimentologists. The Editors wish to thank the International Association of Sedimentology for includ ing another Symposium on ore minerals in its Congress program.

This book is an outgrowth of my interest in the chemistry of sedimentary rocks. In teaching geochemistry, I realized that the best examples for many chemical processes are drawn from the study of ore deposits. Consequently, we initiated a course at The University of Cincinnati entitled "Sedimentary Ore Deposits," which serves as the final quarter course for both our sedimentary petrology and our ore deposits sequence, and this book is based on that teaching experience. Because of my orientation, the treatment given is perhaps more sedimentological than is usually found in books on ore deposits, but I hope that this proves to be an advantage. It will also be obvious that I have drawn heavily on the ideas and techniques of Robert Garrels. A number of people have helped with the creation of this book. I am especially grateful to my students and colleagues at Cincinnati and The Memorial University of Newfoundland for suffering through preliminary versions in my courses. Supergene and Surficial Ore Deposits; Textures and Fabrics is a collection of papers that deals with economic geological deposits, particularly as endogenic type, or as an integral part of their geological environment. One paper explores the possibility that the evolution of ores of sedimentary affiliation or of sedimentary rocks and their chemistry during geologic history can be a product of the evolution of the outer spheres of the earth combined with a cycling phenomena that proceeds in a spiral way. Another paper discusses the role of climate on a large range of depositional environments through mobilization, both by chemical and physical events, of metal-ions. Mobilization can also occur by controlled deposition and enrichment of the "mobilized" ions in a certain sedimentary environment. Various depositions occur in different climates, for example, bauxites, requiring higher precipitation levels, form in humid zones. One paper points that ore-mineral accumulations controlled by descending supergene solutions play a significant role in ore-mineral depositions. The collection is beneficial to geologists, industrial chemists, researchers, technical designers, and engineers whose works are related with ore deposits and mining.
