The concept of photonic crystals, which involves periodically arranged dielectrics that form a new type of material having novel photonic properties, was first proposed about two decades ago. Since then, a number of applications in photonic technology have been explored. Specifically, organic and hybrid photonic crystals are promising because of the unique advantages of the organic materials. In this dissertation, I will discuss 1D and 2D organic photonic crystals with active materials.

Photonic crystals are artificially engineered structures designed to prohibit light propagation in pre-defined spectral intervals called photonic bandgaps by creating regular distribution of the dielectric constant in one, two, or three dimensions, with a period of the order of the pertinent light wavelength. Among many techniques used for preparation of 3-dimensional photonic crystals, colloidal crystallization is arguably the simplest method allowing the fabrication of well-ordered large-scale lattices from colloidal nano-particles. The aim of this project is to extend functionalities of 3-dimensional colloidal photonic crystals for moulding and trapping light by introducing hetero-interfaces and transforming the crystal surface in order to control the in- and out-coupling of the light in the photonic crystal. Specifically, the main accomplishments are: i), the design, fabrication and characterization of novel metal-dielectric hybrid photonic crystals, the metal surface of which supports the Surface Plasmon Polaritons in the spectral range overlapping the photonic bandgap structure. This approach has brought the uniquely broad optical functionality of hybrid nanoarchitectures that rely on synergy of three independently tuneable resonance phenomena, namely, the photonic band gap, the extraordinary transmission and the microcavity resonance in contrast to solely diffraction in parent photonic crystals. ii), the design and fabrication of heterogeneous photonic crystals by integrating the self- and force-assembled (Langmuir Blodgett technique) colloidal crystals of different topologies. The mismatch of the light modes in such hetero-crystals results in the controllable light scattering and guiding at the hetero-interface. The broadband and omnidirectional light trapping was achieved by adding a metal layer at the hetero-interface. Such interface light trapping is a new prospective approach to photon management for the next generation of photovoltaic cells and superbright light sources.
