The rising trend in the global energy demand poses new challenges to humankind. The energy and mechanical engineering sectors are called to develop new and more environmentally friendly solutions to harvest residual energy from primary production processes. The Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) is an emerging energy system for power production and waste heat recovery. In the near future, this technology can play an increasing role within the energy generation sectors and can help achieve the carbon footprint reduction targets of many industrial processes and human activities. This Special Issue focuses on selected research and application cases of ORC-based waste heat recovery solutions. Topics included in this publication cover the following aspects: performance modeling and optimization of ORC systems based on pure and zeotropic mixture working fluids; applications of waste heat recovery via ORC to gas turbines and reciprocating engines; optimal sizing and operation of ORC under combined heat and power and district heating application; the potential of ORC on board ships and related issues; life cycle analysis for biomass application; ORC integration with supercritical CO2 cycle; and the proper design of the main ORC components, including fluid dynamics issues. The current state of the art is considered and some cutting-edge ORC technology research activities are examined in this book.

A thermodynamic system for waste heat recovery, using an organic rankine cycle is provided which employs a single organic heat transferring fluid to recover heat energy from two waste heat streams having differing waste heat temperatures. Separate high and low temperature boilers provide high and low pressure vapor streams that are routed into an integrated turbine assembly having dual turbines mounted on a common shaft. Each turbine is appropriately sized for the pressure ratio of each stream.

Component Matching For Ultra Low Grade Thermal Energy Recovery Operating In Organic Rankine Cycle written by and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with Dissertations, Academic categories.

The aim of this work is to study the influence of component selection and sizing on the thermodynamic performance of an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) designed for ultra-low grade thermal energy recovery. The selected working fluid of the ORC is a refrigerant whose properties are adapted for energy recovery in a low temperature regime, below 100C. Following a mathematical model, validation of the results was conducted using experimental test using commercial water heater as a heat source, with temperature of the hot water ranging from 75 to 90 °C. The system was modeled, designed, assembled, and tested. The limits of the ORC system are evaluated and the results were tabulated. It was found that component efficiencies and sizing have significant impact on system efficiency of ORCs. Expanders are typically expensive, whereas the scroll expander, used in this study, has limited efficiency. Because of the Carnot limit, issues given less attention in traditional Rankine cycle performance analysis, such as pipe diameters on the liquid and vapor sides, become critical in ultra-low grade thermal energy recovery.

The analysis and results of an investigation of the application of organic Rankine cycle heat recovery systems to diesel-powered marine vessels are described. The program under which this study was conducted was sponsored jointly by the US Energy Research and Development Administration, the US Navy, and the US Maritime Administration. The overall objective of this study was to investigate diesel bottoming energy recovery systems, currently under development by three US concerns, to determine the potential for application to marine diesel propulsion and auxiliary systems. The study primarily focused on identifying the most promising vessel applications (considering vessel type, size, population density, operational duty cycle, etc.) so the relative economic and fuel conservation merits of energy recovery systems could be determined and assessed. Vessels in the current fleet and the projected 1985 fleet rated at 1000 BHP class and above were investigated.
