This book is a guide to the principles and practice of organic waste recycling, it addresses low-cost waste recycling technologies utilising microbial and natural processes. A wide range of topics is covered, opening with a discussion of the need for and the problems involved in organic waste recycling. The characteristics of a number of organic waste materials from a variety of sources, and the pollution and health risks which may be associated with them are described. The central core of the book presents a broad range of technologies used in the recycling of organic waste materials to produce valuable products such as : fertiliser, biogas, algae, fish and irrigated crops. Each recycling technology is described with respect to : objectives, benefits and limitations, environmental requirements, design criteria of the process, use of recycled products and public health aspects. This second edition has been completely revised and up-dated. It includes new sections on: waste minimisation and clean technology, application of constructed wetlands and regulatory aspects of waste disposal and recycling. Case studies of successful waste recycling programs are included and exercises for solving both theoretical and practical problems are given.

Organic Waste Recycling And Treatment written by Ollie Hall and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-09-13 with categories.

Organic waste or biodegradable waste refers to all those waste materials which originate from living sources such as plants, animals and microorganisms. They can be broken down into simple molecules like water, methane and carbon dioxide. They can be classified into cattle wastes, food wastes, and municipal solid wastes. Organic waste recycling refers to all those processes which aid in managing organic waste, and converting it into useful matter using various treatments and techniques. Some of the commonly used methods are composting, anaerobic digestion, rendering, immobilized enzyme reaction, rapid thermophilic digestion, and using organic waste as animal fodder. Some of the challenges associated with this discipline are generation of odor and air pollution, accumulation of heavy metals, and formation of bioaerosols. This book unravels the recent studies in the area of organic waste recycling and treatment. It is a compilation of chapters that discuss the most vital concepts, and methods of recycling and treatment of organic waste. This book aims to serve as a resource guide for students and experts alike and contribute to the growth of the discipline.

Uncontrolled spreading of waste materials leads to health problems and environmental damage. To prevent these problems a waste management infrastructure has been set to collect and dispose of the waste, based on a hierarchy of three principles: waste prevention, recycling/reuse, and final disposal. Final disposal is the least desirable as it causes massive emissions, to the atmosphere, water bodies and the subsoil. The emission of methane to the atmosphere is an important source of greenhouse gasses. Organic waste therefore gets a lot of attention in waste management, which for Europe can be illustrated by the issue of the Landfill Directive (99/31/EC) and the Sewage Sludge Directive (86/278/EEC). Proper treatment of organic waste may however turn this burden into an asset. In particular, biological treatment may help in developing more effective resource management and sustainable development. The following advantages may be listed: The greenhouse effect is tackled as methane emissions from landfilling are prevented Soil quality can be restored or enhanced by the use of compost in agriculture Compost may replace peat in horticulture and home gardening, reducing greenhouse emissions and wetland exploitation Anaerobic digestion has the additional benefit of producing biogas that may be used as a fuel Pesticide use can be reduced by proper use of the disease suppressive properties of compost Resource Recovery and Reuse in Organic Solid Waste Management disseminates at advanced scientific level the potential of environmental biotechnology for the recovery and reuse of products from solid waste. Several options to recover energy out of organic solid waste from domestic, agricultural and industrial origin are presented and discussed and existing economically feasible treatment systems that produce energy out of solid waste and recover useful by-products in the form of fertiliser or soil conditioner are demonstrated. The potential of environmental biotechnology is highlighted from different perspectives: societal, technological and practical.

Composting And Organic Waste Recycling A Better Option For Food Safety And Food Security written by Alabi Olusoji David and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018 with Science categories.

Composting is a process of degrading organic waste to form a stable material through a control process called aerobics with a biodegradation conversion process that allows the colonization of beneficial microorganisms. Careful handling of inorganic waste was significant to reducing the cost of compounding livestock feed and minimizing waste disposal in the community. Innovative technologies can inactivate pathogens in organic waste. Compost has been found to be effective in stimulating plant growth and suppressing diseases and pathogens. Safety standards remains essential for producing food rich in proteins. The use of compost can sufficiently address the challenges of malnutrition and poverty worldwide. Composting through invertebrates was also found to be significant. This is the basis upon which life exists because of the continued recycling of waste. Food security and safety goes hand in hand with the use of compost. None of these parameters must be overlooked if food production is required to meet the needs of the continuously growing population in the future.
