In this fascinating collection of essays, noted cultural critic Geoffrey Hartman raises the essential question of where we can find the real or authentic in today's world, and how this affects the way we can understand our human predicament. Hartman explores such issues as the fantasy of total and perfect information available on the Internet, the biographical excesses of tell-all daytime talk shows, and how we can understand what is "true" in biographical and testimonial writing. And, what, he asks, is the ethical point of all this personal testimony? What has it really taught us? Underlying the entire book is a question of how the Holocaust has shaped the possibilities for truth and for the writing of an authentic life story in today's world, and how we can approach the world in a meaningful way. Hartman produces a meditation on how an appreciation of the aesthetic qualities of art and writing may help us to answer these questions of meaning.

The significant strides made during the past decade in neonatal medicine are based largely upon the provision of intensive perinatal care to the parturient, her fetus, and the newborn. In addition to technologic advances in the bioelec tronic monitoring of the fetus and newborn, the introduction of noninvasive methods to monitor oxygenation, the pharma cologic manipulation ofthe ductus arteriosus and pulmonary vasculature, and the use of ultrasonographic diagnosis of congenital heart defects and other lesions, intensive efforts by neonatal specialists throughout the world have also contri buted to the decline in neonatal and infant mortality. Professors Wille and Obladen have provided an authoritative manual outlining intensive care of newborns and the ways in which the science of neonatal medicine, the technology of the 1980 s, and the art of application have resulted in the practice of neonatal intensive care at the Kinderklinik of the University of Heidelberg. The English translation resulted from the success of the German edition and will serve well the needs of the English-speaking student and practitioner of neonatal intensive care. T. More Than One Picture written by Felix Thürlemann and has been published by Getty Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-11-26 with Art categories.

This thought-provoking and original book argues that hyperimages—calculated displays of images on walls or pages—have played a major role in the history of art. In exhibitions, illustrated art books, and classrooms, artworks or their photographic reproductions are arranged as calculated ensembles that have their own importance. In this volume, Felix Thürlemann develops a theory of this type of image use, arguing that with each new gathering of images, an art object is reinterpreted. These hyperimages have played a major role in the history of art since the seventeenth century, and the main actors of the art world are all hyperimage creators. In part because the hyperimage is not permanently available, this interplay of images has been largely unexplored. Through case studies organized within three groups of producers—collectors and curators, art historians, and artists—Thürlemann proposes a theory of the hyperimage, explores the semiotic nature of this plural image use, and discusses the arrangement and interpretation of such pictures in order to illuminate the phenomenon of Western image culture from the beginning of the seventeenth century until today. His analysis of the ways in which images are assembled and associated provides a crucial context for the explosive present-day deployment of images on digital devices.

Shorter Days written by Anna Katharina Hahn and has been published by Canelo this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-06-13 with Fiction categories.

‘A godsend for German literature’ Ina Hartwig It’s Autumn in Stuttgart, just before Halloween, and thirty-something mothers Judith and Leonie are safely ensconced in their upmarket apartments in one of the city’s best neighborhoods. Judith has squeezed her life into the straitjacket of wholesome stay-at-home motherhood – no TV, no sweets, nature hikes, and, above all, routine – and marriage to staid university professor Klaus. Leonie is proud of her work at a bank and her husband Simon’s career, though she worries that she’s neglecting her young daughters, and that Simon’s work distracts him from his family. Over the course of a few days, Judith and Leonie’s apparently stable, successful lives are thrown into turmoil by the secrets they keep, the pressures they’ve been keeping at bay, and the waves of change lapping at the peaceful shores of their existence. Shorter Days is both an ‘exorcism of women’s fears’ and a heartrending exploration of the joys and challenges of modern family life. Anna Katharina Hahn was born in 1970. Her other works include the collection of stories Kavaliersdelikt (Petty Crime), for which she was awarded the Clemens Brentano Prize in 2005, and Am Schwarzen Berg (The Neighbours) in 2012. In 2010, Anna Katharina Hahn was awarded the Heimito von Doderer Literary Award. Shorter Days was longlisted for the German Book Prize in 2009. ‘The focus, in particular, on the seemingly everyday quality of life, as well as the fact that the plot takes place over only a few days – which lead directly to disaster – are what make Shorter Days so captivating, as well as shocking’ Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung ‘Shorter Days begins like a family play and broadens to world-class theater ... terrific’ Süddeutsche Zeitung

This work deals with legal pluralism in an emerging world society. It central thesis is that globalization of law tends to create a decentred law-making process which occurs in multiple sectors of civil society, independently of nation states. Technical standardization, professional rule production, human rights, intra-organizational regulation in multinational enterprises, contracting, arbitration and other institutions of lex mercatoria are forms of rule by private governments, claiming world-wide validity independently of the law of the nation states. They have come into existence not by formal acts of nation states but by strange paradoxical acts of self-validation.

This sixth book in the Portraits of Pioneers in Psychology Series preserves the diversity that has characterized earlier volumes as it brings to life psychologists who have made substantial contributions to the field of the history of psychology. These chapters illustrate the pioneering endeavors of such significant figures, and are written in a lively, engaging style by authors who themselves have achieved a reputation as excellent scholars in the history of psychology. Several of the chapters are based on the author's personal acquaintance with a pioneer, and new, previously unavailable information about these luminaries is presented in this volume. Each of these volumes provides glimpses into the personal and scholarly lives of 20 giants in the history of psychology. Prominent scholars provide chapters on a pioneer who made important contributions in their own area of expertise. A special section in each volume provides portraits of the editors and authors, containing interesting information about the relationship between the pioneers and the psychologists who describe them. Utilizing an informal, personal, sometimes humorous, style of writing, the books will appeal to students and instructors interested in the history of psychology. Each of the six volumes in this series contains different profiles, thereby bringing more than 120 of the pioneers in psychology more vividly to life.
