This study in criminology, sociology, and the US Military, explores changes in the meaning and production of deviant populations in American military settings since 1941. It is designed to highlight the operation of an ethos of control as armed forces and society undergo historically unstable accommodation and conflict. The author examines time series data on organizational reaction to deviance in military settings ('Bad Paper Discharges,'¥ courts-martial, and administrative controls) in light of central characteristics of military settings (the social composition of officer and enlisted ranks, force levels, technological changes in war hardware and the distribution of risks faced by various kinds of soldiers). Propositions from the deviance literature concerning 1) the constancy of punishment, 2) the duration, intensity, and priority of sanctioning, and 3) cohesion and stress are examined in military contexts to discern the changing social control climates therein. Some sources of the shift are located in the role that risk plays in the system and the function of the officer corps as agents of social control. In short: the character of social institutions is knowable, in part, by studying the manner in which deviants therein are controlled, stigmatized and expelled. An extensive bibliography is provided.

The success of an organization may be dependent on limiting the potential for deviant behavior, and if necessary, reacting to deviant behavior in a positive way. Managing Organizational Deviance goes beyond questions of control to also consider ethical dimensions of conduct. As a result, it teaches students who will go on to inhabit organizations to become familiar with the ethical implications of deviant and dysfunctional behavior in addition to managing this behavior in an effective way.

Workplace crimes are never far from the news. From major scandals like Enron to violent crimes committed by co-workers to petty theft of office supplies, deviant and criminal behaviour is common in the workplace. Psychological factors are almost always involved when an employee engages in such behaviour. Deviant and Criminal Behavior in the Workplace offers insights at the level of the individual employee and also sheds light on the role organizations themselves may play in fostering such criminal behaviour. The volume considers psychological factors involved in theft and fraud, workplace violence, employee discrimination, and sexual harassment. It also analyses a number of variables which can influence such behaviour including employee personality, employee emotional processes, experience of occupational stress, organizational culture, organizational injustice, and human resource management practices. The book will be of core interest to those interested in the psychology and sociology of work, organizational behaviour, and human resource management.

This book explores the topic of pro-social rule-breaking — more specifically, when employees break formal organizational rules intending to help the company. Generally, managers react to rule-breaking with sanctions; this may lead one to question why some employees break the rules without any apparent personal advantages despite the risk of being sanctioned. The first part of this book discusses the various reasons for rule-breaking based on literature. Leadership-related factors are notably important: how leaders have reacted to pro-social rule-breaking in the past often influences future employee behavior. For this reason, the second part of this book empirically deals with the leadership perspective, which has been largely neglected in research so far. In response to pro-social rule-breaking, leaders face a dilemma because they are subject to competing demands: ensuring rule compliance versus goal achievement. Therefore, the goal of this book is to research and identify cues that leders use to rationalize their response to pro-social rule-breaking. In this way, I aim to create a better understanding of responses to well-intentioned rule-breaking.

This intriguing new volume provides an understanding of the various forms of antisocial behavior in the workplace and how they can be identified and managed--if not prevented altogether. Antisocial Behavior in Organizations includes analysis of the role of frustration in antisocial behavior, and discusses issues such as employee revenge, aggression, lying, theft, and sabotage. Whistle blowing, litigation, and claiming are also explored as types of behavior that may be considered antisocial even though their stated goal is perhaps prosocial. The book concludes by making connections between antisocial behavior and organizational climate--addressing the need for modification in the workplace to reduce antisocial behavior. Academics, students, and practitioners in the fields of management, industrial/organizational psychology, sociology, social psychology, legal studies and criminal justice will appreciate this collection of original essays written by well-respected experts.
