All organizations, institutions, business processes, markets and strategies have one aim in common: the reduction of transaction costs. This aim is pursued relentlessly in practice, and has been perceived to bring about drastic changes, especially in the recent global market and the cyber economy. This book analyzes and describes “transactions” as a model, on the basis of which organizations, institutions and business processes can be appropriately shaped. It tracks transaction costs to enable a scientific approach instead of a widely used “state-of-the-art” approach, working to bridge the gap between theory and practice. This open access book analyzes and describes “transactions” as a model...

The globalisation of supply chains and networks causes traders from all over the world to make transactions with each other. Many transactions are made in world markets where the price is the way in which supply and demand are brought together. Other transactions, however, are made between people who know each other and have business relationships, using the so-called network mode of organisation. These traders may be loyal to one another and consider the role of social variables like trust, embeddedness and culture in their choices. This balance between network and market modes of organisation is not yet fully understood and is addressed in this book. This book uses a new research method that is ideally suited to study complex supply networks with all of its different traders. Gaming simulation is an established method for training and policy evaluation, but its application as a both quantitative and qualitative research method is relatively new. Two gaming simulations, called the Trust and Tracing Game (to study trust and cheating) and the Mango Chain Game (to study bargaining power and revenue distribution) are applied to show empirical results of a generic supply network trading products with a hidden quality attribute and the mango supply network from Costa Rica. This book is of interest for two categories of readers. Those who may like to concentrate on the empirical results will be interested in the factors that determine the choice of a mode of organisation in supply networks. Those who are interested in the methodology may wish to use gaming simulation as a research tool in their own research.

Master's Thesis from the year 2021 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 2,0, FH Vienna, language: English, abstract: Which factors impact the likelihood and extent of employee turnover after M&A transactions? What measures can be taken during post-merger integration to retain key players? This master thesis gathered and evaluated knowledge of experts in the field of M&A regarding employee turnover and employee retention. The yearly number of worldwide M&A transactions increased from 1990 to 2019 by nearly five times. The yearly average increased steadily over the last decades. The 1990’s averaged about 20.500 deals, the 2000’s 37.000 deals and the 2010’s 46.500 deals per year. (Thomson Financial, Institute for Mergers, Acquisitions and Alliances [IMAA], 2020) Smith (2002) analyzed 49 studies regarding the success rates of organizational change. Among them were also 9 studies concerning M&A transactions. The median success rates for these transactions stated at 33%, while the median success rate for all analyzed studies in different forms of organizational change, ranging from strategy deployment to general culture change or software implementation, also was 33%. It should be mentioned that the measurements of success for most forms of organizational change are varying or sometimes not disclosed at all and therefore these results should be taken with caution. A valuable takeaway of Smith’s analysis though definitely should be the assumption that change in organizations is very often accompanied by a myriad of hurdles and challenges. More recent academic work also backs that statement. Malmendier, Moretti, and Peters (2018) looked at stock performance of winning and losing bidders. They conclude that the entities that lost takeover bids on average outperform the winning bidders by 24 to 37% over the next 3 years. King, Dalton, Daily, and Covin (2004) come to the conclusion that on average M&A activity does not lead to improvements of financial performance for the acquiring company. Instead, their results show either no or a slightly negative change in performance post-merger.

Toward Behavioral Transaction Cost Economics written by George Z. Peng and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-26 with Business & Economics categories.

Adopting a critical realist position, this book renders transaction cost economics (TCE) into a behavioral theory of organizational decision-making by foregrounding psychological processes and introducing and integrating with effectuation theory. Consistent with its behavioral agenda, the book introduces the concept of uncertainty controllability and provides a clearer conceptualization and a novel modeling strategy of bounded rationality based on the conceptual separation of cognitive bounds from psychological ‘rationalizing.’ The book inspires new insights into the significance of cultural distance (CD). Based on the understanding that culture is socially-extended cognition, the author re-conceptualizes CD as reflecting cognitive bounds, and uses the biases arising from CD to contextualize effectuation and deepen the flat ontology of both TCE and effectuation theory. The book presents a full two-sided behavioral framework of organizational decision-making, with behavioral TCE and behavioral real options theory complementing each other to complete the full behavioral picture. Both sides are further linked to organizational learning, which reduces biases over time and thus drives governance structures toward more rational directions. The full framework uses prospect theory as the overarching theory that determines which side of the behavioral framework is relevant for the uncertainty of concern based on the different problem frames resulting from different degrees of uncertainty controllability. Because effectuation can take place on both sides of the framework based on competing risk logics, prospect theory serves to harmonize inconsistencies in the effectuation literature as a side note. This book applies the behavioral TCE side of the framework to the study of MNC subsidiary ownership decision-making process using a dataset of over 10,000 Japanese subsidiaries founded in 43 host countries. It concludes with a discussion of implications and future directions for TCE in general and international business in particular.

The LNCS journal Transactions on Large-Scale Data- and Knowledge-Centered Systems focuses on data management, knowledge discovery, and knowledge processing, which are core and hot topics in computer science. Since the 1990s, the Internet has become the main driving force behind application development in all domains. An increase in the demand for resource sharing (e.g., computing resources, services, metadata, data sources) across different sites connected through networks has led to an evolution of data- and knowledge management systems from centralized systems to decentralized systems enabling large-scale distributed applications providing high scalability. This, the 48th issue of Transactions on Large-Scale Data- and Knowledge-Centered Systems, contains 8 invited papers dedicated to the memory of Prof. Dr. Roland Wagner. The topics covered include distributed database systems, NewSQL, scalable transaction management, strong consistency, caches, data warehouse, ETL, reinforcement learning, stochastic approximation, multi-agent systems, ontology, model-driven development, organisational modelling, digital government, new institutional economics and data governance.
