Realizzato interamente su documenti d'archivio e documentazione tratta da giornali e riviste dell'epoca, questo volume offre la ricostruzione più completa e dettagliata del teatro italiano nel periodo fascista. Vengono così delineate, in primo luogo, l'evoluzione del mondo teatrale, che spazia dai circuiti delle sale alla composizione sociale del pubblico, dalle vicende dei principali protagonisti (attori, autori, impresari) alla stampa specializzata; secondariamente, la politica del fascismo verso il teatro, iniziata negli anni Venti con la creazione di specifiche organizzazioni sindacali, il sostegno finanziario alle compagnie in crisi e il miraggio della creazione di un grande teatro di Stato. Lo studio mostra come questa politica negli anni Trenta dia luogo a un controllo totalitario del settore - realizzato tramite il Ministero della cultura popolare - non privo di durezza, come sperimenta la Suvini Zerboni, principale industria teatrale del tempo. Il regime insegue l'obiettivo di trasformare il teatro in un vero e proprio mezzo mediatico di propaganda, con strumenti come le filodrammatiche o i Carri di Tespi, le iniziative del 'teatro di massa' e l'appoggio a tutte le crociate politiche del fascismo (la guerra per l'Impero, la campagna antiborghese, quella antisemita). Tutto ciò prosegue anche durante il conflitto mondiale fino agli ultimi giorni della Repubblica di Salò, quando prende forma la ribellione di molti giovani artisti e intellettuali alle imposizioni estetico-culturali e ideologiche del regime. La storia del teatro durante il fascismo risulta pertanto significativa non solo come ricostruzione di un'importante pagina storica, ma anche perché permette di risalire alla genesi della struttura teatrale odierna e di gettare luce sui caratteri della complessiva esperienza fascista, vista attraverso il prisma della sua politica culturale. Since the 1920s, an endless flow of studies has analyzed the political systems of fascism, theseizure of power, the nature of the regimes, the atrocities committed, and, finally, the wars waged against other countries. However, much less attention has been paid to the strategies of persuasion employed by the regimes to win over the masses for their cause. Among these, fascist propaganda has traditionally been seen as the key means of influencing public opinion. Only recently has the "fascination with Fascism" become a topic of enquiry that has also formed the guiding interest of this volume: it offers, for the first time, a comparative analysis of the forms and functions of theater in countries governed by fascist or para-fascist regimes. "Futurism was the state of the Fascist regime" - this is the view one encounters in most books written on Futurist art and literature. Whilst there can be no doubt about Futurist involvement with the founding of the fascist movement, little is known about the internal relationship between Futurists and Fascists in the years 1918-22, nor about the reasons for the Futurists' departure from the Fascist movement in 1920, or about Futurist opposition to (and even armed struggle against) the Fascist regime after 1924. Whilst the public documents testifying to Futurist support of Mussolini are well known, little has been written about Futurist anti-fascism camouflaged as official adherence to the regime. This study, based primarily on unknown or unpublished documents discovered in state archives and private collections, presents a new andfar more complex picture of the relationship of the two movements than has previously been shown by critics and historians.
