Romolo Murri (1870-1944) è stato uno dei maggiori protagonisti della vita politica e culturale italiana fra Otto e Novecento. Sacerdote, influenzato dalle idee di Antonio Labriola, si accostò alla dottrina sociale di Leone XIII; fondatore di riviste e giornali, si dinstinse come organizzatore degli universitari cattolici e poi come animatore del movimento democratico-cristiano. Tuttavia le sue posizioni culturali e politiche e, soprattutto, la sua battaglia affinché i cattolici potessero partecipare alla vita politica italiana, lo posero in rotta di collisione con la Chiesa di Pio X. Prima sospeso a divinis (1907) e poi scomunicato, nel 1909, in seguito all'elezione in Parlamento, avrebbe militato nelle file del Partito radicale. L'attenzione degli storici si è molto soffermata su questa stagione, mentre diversi snodi dell'itinerario successivo hanno dovuto attendere a lungo un rinnovamento degli studi. Di recente si è risvegliata l'attenzione sulla sua esperienza nel ventennio fascista, una fase ricca di relazioni personali, politiche e intellettuali e caratterizzata da una notevole produzione pubblicistica e giornalistica – spicca il lungo sodalizio con «il Resto del Carlino» – che nel regime rivela un impasto tra temi più propriamente murriani e quelli ufficiali, in auge nel dibattito pubblico, registrando, dalla seconda metà tra gli anni trenta, l'avvio di un'articolata fase di disgelo con il fronte cattolico, connessa a una riflessione sempre più incentrata sul cristianesimo come fondamento e discrimine di civiltà. Sulla base di una vasta e originale ricerca archivistica e documentaria, l'opera ricostruisce gli anni del regime prefigurando la strada che – pochi mesi prima della scomparsa, avvenuta nel clima plumbeo della Roma occupata – avrebbe ricondotto Murri nell'alveo della Chiesa, comunque destinataria di riflessioni critiche intorno all'effettiva capacità di produrre un'autentica efficacia storica del cristianesimo.
