How were blacks in American slavery formed, out of a multiplicity of African ethnic peoples, into a single people? In this major study of Afro-American culture, Sterling Stuckey, a leading thinker on black nationalism for the past twenty years, explains how different African peoples interacted during the nineteenth century to achieve a common culture. He finds that, at the time of emancipation, slaves were still overwhelmingly African in culture, a conclusion with profound implications for theories of black liberation and for the future of race relations in America. By examining anthropological evidence about Central and West African cultural traditions--Bakongo, Ibo, Dahomean, Mendi and others--and exploring the folklore of the American slave, Stuckey has arrived at an important new cross-cultural analysis of the Pan-African impulse among slaves that contributed to the formation of a black ethos. He establishes, for example, the centrality of an ancient African ritual--the Ring Shout or Circle Dance--to the black American religious and artistic experience. Black nationalist theories, the author points out, are those most in tune with the implication of an African presence in America during and since slavery. Casting a fresh new light on these ideas, Stuckey provides us with fascinating profiles of such nineteenth century figures as David Walker, Henry Highland Garnet, and Frederick Douglas. He then considers in detail the lives and careers of W. E. B. Dubois and Paul Robeson in this century, describing their ambition that blacks in American society, while struggling to end racism, take on roles that truly reflected their African heritage. These concepts of black liberation, Stuckey suggests, are far more relevant to the intrinsic values of black people than integrationist thought on race relations. But in a final revelation he concludes that, with the exception of Paul Robeson, the ironic tendency of black nationalists has been to underestimate the depths of African culture in black Americans and the sophistication of the slave community they arose from.

Higinio Marín, es rector de la Universidad CEU Cardenal Herrera (CEU UCH) des del maig de 2023. Doctor en Filosofia, des del 2006 forma part del claustre de professors de la CEU UCH (València-Elx-Castelló), on imparteix Antropologia Filosòfica i altres matèries de la seva àrea d’estudi. Ha format part del Consell de Govern de la Universitat, on ha ocupat diversos vicerectorats: ordenació acadèmica i professorat, investigació, planificació estratègica. A la CEU UCH el curs passat hi va haver gairebé 12.000 estudiants de grau, postgrau i doctorat entre els tres campus, i la universitat compta amb mil professors als claustres de les facultats. Ha estat professor a la Universidad de Navarra (1990-1996), a la Universidad Pública de Navarra (1996-1997) i a la Universidad Católica San Antonio de Múrcia (1998-2006). És professor d’universitats internacionals i d’instituts universitaris i escoles de govern i negocis. També ha participat en òrgans rectors i consultius d’ens públics i institucions acadèmiques. Forma part del Consell Rector de la Fundació Civisme. "Se analiza, desde un enfoque jurídico, sin demeritar los aspectos históricos y políticos, los aportes efectuados a la configuración y consolidación del Derecho Humanitario de la Guerra Hispano-Grancolombiano o Ius in Bello Hispano-Grancolombiano, como categoría normativa y dogmática con una potente fundamentación ética, axiológica, política y filosófica destinado a la humanización y la regulación sobre la conducción del conflicto armado internacional que representó la lucha de independencia latinoamericana (1810-1830) sometiendo su ejercicio al Derecho y los principios de humanidad y civilidad, contenido en acuerdos humanitarios convencionales pactados entre La Gran Colombia y el Reino de España como el Tratado de Armisticio y el Tratado de Regularización de la Guerra (Trujillo, Venezuela, 1820) y demás convenios, capitulaciones e instrumentos humanitarios bilaterales, interestatales y sinalagmáticos integrantes de un sistema regulatorio pro homine que, por su influencia normativa, devino como fuente jurídica directa y primaria de los principios básicos del Derecho Internacional Humanitario (DIH) vigente, destacando los aportes del derecho de la guerra español y la humanización de la guerra de estirpe bolivariana a su configuración. Estadistas guerreros de ambos Estados, forjaron el derecho humanitario de la guerra, en medio de mortales combates, sin ceder a la tentación de la venganza, que luego fue recogido y reflejado en el DIH actual, ampliando su radio de aplicación de modo multilateral en Europa, a partir de 1864, con la regulación ginebrina y hayense sobre la guerra, que tuvo en el Ius in Bello Hispano-Grancolombiano su punto de partida. Se resalta que la política, la negociación y la paz son inherentes a la dignidad humana, que no hay `guerra justa´ y que la guerra es `odiosa´. Con el papa Francisco (Encíclica Fratelli Tutti, 2020) el autor dice: “Entonces ya no podemos pensar en la guerra como solución, debido a que los riesgos probablemente siempre serán superiores a la hipotética utilidad que se le atribuya. Ante esta realidad, hoy es muy difícil sostener los criterios racionales madurados en otros siglos para hablar de una posible “guerra justa”. ¡Nunca más la guerra!”.
