"The idea of original sin owes its development more to Augustine than to any other individual. We cannot understand this idea, much less believe it, unless we consider his primary motive for developing it. His 'Confessions', a masterpiece of personal reflection, reveals the psychological dynamic that renders a free person's implication in social and historical evil irreversible from the beginning. The author traces this interior bondage of the will through Augustine's own life from his infancy and youth, through his dramatic conversion, to his mature years of reflection and ministry as bishop. It presents original sin not only autobiographically, but also historically, as the first and universal sin of mankind, and primordially, as the fundamental cause and meaning at the root of all moral impotence and sin. This volume argues that the doctrine of original sin stands together with the doctrine of grace as the foundation of Augustine's teachings on confession and salvation; it rejects a recent development in Augustine studies that reduces Augustine's doctrine of original sin to an ancillary, polemical role as a weapon in the arsenal against Pelagian voluntarism. Above all, it allows this doctrine to live now as it did for Augustine, by permitting us to observe as he reflects theologically upon his personal experience of God." [Book jacket].

The Confessions of Augustine have long both demanded and eluded the sustained and serious attention to detail that a scholarly commentary can provide. This new work in three volumes is a major new reference in Augustine scholarship. A revised Latin text of the Confessions in Volume I forms the basis for a detailed line-by-line commentary (Volumes II and III) designed to elucidate the many layers of meaning in the work. Extensive quotation and abundant citation of Augustine's own writings, of the scriptural texts that were never far from his mind, and of the works of his intellectual forebears (chief among them Cicero, Plotinus, and Ambrose) are meant to provide one essential context for reading the Confessions. Placing the emphasis primarily on exegesis, O'Donnell opens up new lines of interpretation, and gives a wealth of fresh detail to some more familiar themes. The place of the Confessions in Augustine's own life and in the history of Christian literature is also discussed and illuminated.

Augustine's Confessions is generally regarded as one of the most influential texts in the history of Christian thought. Written in the form of an autobiographical account of Augustine's early life and conversion, the Confessions skillfully treats such profound topics as original sin, grace, election, conversion, and the mystical experience in a way that has inspired and moved readers throughout the centuries. This new, thoughtfully-edited edition of the Confessions is a 21st century translation of the text aimed specifically at the "uninitiated"--those with limited prior knowledge of early Christian doctrine or Augustinian theology. With helpful commentary and the inclusion of additional relevant primary sources, Augustine's Confessions: A Guide for the Uninitiated makes it possible to read the Confessions in the way that Augustine originally intended: as a reflection of the reader's own life and journey to self-realization.

Henry Chadwick, an eminent scholar of early Christianity, has given us the first new English translation in thirty years of Augustine's The Confessions. We witness the future saint's fascination with astrology and with the Manichees, and then follow him through scepticism and disillusion with pagan myths until he finally reaches Christian faith. There are brilliant philosophical musings about Platonism and the nature of God, and touching portraits of Augustine's beloved mother, of St. Ambrose of Milan, and of other early Christians like Victorinus, who gave up a distinguished career as a rhetorician to adopt the orthodox faith. To make The Confessions accessible to contemporary readers, Chadwick provides the most complete and informative notes of any recent translation, and includes an introduction to establish the context.
