With the life story of Shibusawa Eiichi (1840–1931), one of the most important financiers and industrialists in modern Japanese history, as its narrative focal point, this book explores the challenges of importing modern business enterprises to Japan, where the pursuit of profit was considered beneath the dignity of the samurai elite. Seeking to overturn the Tokugawa samurai-dominated political economy after the Meiji Restoration, Shibusawa was a pioneer in introducing joint-stock corporations to Japan as institutions of economic development. As the entrepreneurial head of Tokyo’s Dai-Ichi Bank, he helped launch modern enterprises in such diverse industries as banking, shipping, textiles, paper, beer, and railroads. Believing businesses should be both successful and serve the national interest, Shibusawa regularly cautioned against the pursuit of profit alone. He insisted instead on the ‘unity of morality and economy’ following business ethics derived from the Confucian Analects. A top leader in Japan’s business community for decades, Shibusawa contributed to founding the Tokyo Stock Exchange, the Tokyo Chamber of Commerce, and numerous educational and philanthropic organizations to promote his vision of Confucian capitalism. This volume marks an important contribution to the international debate on the extent to which capitalist enterprises have a responsibility to serve and benefit the societies in which they do business. Shibusawa's story demonstrates that business, government, trade associations, and educational institutions all have valuable roles to play in establishing a political economy that is both productive and humane.

This study is an English translation of Gendai kinken shi (The Power of Money inModern Japanese History), written in Japanese by Yamaji Aizan (1865-1917) and published as abook in 1908 by Hattori Shoten and Bunsendō. Yamaji Aizan was one of the most influentialintellectual figures during the Meiji period. Born as the son of samurai, he became a journalist, wrote many articles and books that shaped the public sphere in a variety of fields such as politics, economy, and current events. In Gendai kinken shi, Yamaji details the history of modern Japan, especially the relationship between politics and the fugō, the rich men who emerged during theMeiji government's promotion of industry. He describes how these fugō (e.g., Iwasaki Yatarō,the founder of the Mitsubishi zaibatsu, a financial conglomerate) developed political connections, ultimately controlling politics and arguably having more power than politicians themselves.Yamaji critiques these fugō, characterizing them as modern Japan's new daimyo or feudal lords. He argues that fugō should spend their money on behalf of the common people, not onthemselves, and that this must be accomplished through an intervention of the government. Thisis what Yamaji calls, "a unit of community" (seikatsu kyōdōtai). Gendai kinken shi is a pioneerwork of economics and a classic text regarding the theory of the fugō during the Meiji period. While Yamaji is an important figure in the history of modern Japan, the English-languageliterature written discussing his contribution to Japan's intellectual and economic history arelimited, with very few English translations of his original works. This study seeks to restore thiscritical voice to the English-language historiography of the economic theory and intellectualhistory of Meiji Japan by providing Western scholars with an English translation of YamajiAizan's influential work, Gendai kinken shi.

Excerpt from The National Wealth of Japan Japan has now entered the comity of World Powers and is destined to test her strength in the peaceful struggles of trade and industry with those Powers. In waging this war of peace the first requisite must be to ascertain accurately the capacity of the national resources, and to devise measures to further develop and promote them. For comparison is a first essential in anything, and unless a careful inventory is taken as to relative strength, relative merit or relative weight, it is impossible to judge how one thing is superior to another, and how a nation can successfully cope with which it is called on to compete. Especially is the comparison of wealth imperatively necessary for enabling a nation to judge its position in the field of international trade and industry. It has therefore been a matter of serious concern to me that we had in Japan only scanty materials to judge the wealth-producing power of the country. Fortunatly this grave defect is likely to be removed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. "Money and finance have been among the most potent tools of colonial power. This study investigates the Japanese experiment with financial imperialism—or “yen diplomacy”—at several key moments between the acquisition of Taiwan in 1895 and the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War in 1937. Through authoritarian monetary reforms and lending schemes, government officials and financial middlemen served as “money doctors” who steered capital and expertise to Japanese official and semi-official colonies in Taiwan, Korea, China, and Manchuria. Michael Schiltz points to the paradox of acute capital shortages within the Japan’s domestic economy and aggressive capital exports to its colonial possessions as the inevitable but ultimately disastrous outcome of the Japanese government’s goal to exercise macroeconomic control over greater East Asia and establish a self-sufficient “yen bloc.” Through their efforts to implement their policies and contribute to the expansion of the Japanese empire, the “money doctors” brought to the colonies a series of banking institutions and a corollary capitalist ethos, which would all have a formidable impact on the development of the receiving countries, eventually affecting their geopolitical position in the postcolonial world."

This ground-breaking book provides the first English-language survey of economic thought in modern Japan. Significantly, it offers both a detailed study of economic thought from 1600 to 1945 and a nuanced analysis of Western and Asian perspectives on the field of Japanese economic history. Expertly translated from Japanese and written by leading scholars in the field, this exciting study includes: * A novel approach to economic thought which contextualizes the core values of thinkers across the period * A comparative analysis of Japanese economic history which looks at the continuities across the Meiji divide * The extensive use of archival sources, many of which were previously unavailable in English A History of Economic Thought in Japan, 1600 - 1945 serves as a case study of how Western economic ideas spread to non-Western regions and interacted with indigenous ideas. It will therefore be of immense value to both scholars of economic thought and those seeking a deeper understanding of the moral, intellectual, and societal forces that shaped modern Japan.

By now everyone knows the basic facts of China's rise to pre-eminence over the past three decades. But how did this erstwhile sleeping giant finally manage to arrive at its current phase of dynamic growth? How did a century-long succession of failures to change somehow culminate in the extraordinary dynamism of China today? By examining the lives of eleven influential officials, writers, activists and leaders whose contributions helped create modern China, Wealth and Power addresses these questions. This fascinating survey moves from the lead-up to the first Opium War through to contemporary opposition to single-party rule. Along the way, we meet titans of Chinese history, intellectuals and political figures. By unwrapping the intellectual antecedents of today's resurgent China, Orville Schell and John Delury supply much-needed insight into the country's tortured progression from nineteenth-century decline to twenty-first-century boom. By looking backward into the past to understand forces at work for hundreds of years, they help us understand China today and the future that this singular country is helping shape for all of us.

Japan's emergence as an economic superpower - one whose trade surplus with the rest of the world stood in 1993 at $140 billion - has been neither sudden nor entirely economically driven. Rather it is the result of a centuries-old process. Japan's understanding of the wider world, of trade and of other relationships has expanded in stages, each determined by both internal and external factors.
