Religions In Rio written by João do Rio and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015 with Brazil categories.

João do Rio (1881-1921) was a literary journalist before his time, before the term existed, before anyone saw that journalism could be raised to the level of art by infusing it with intellecual insight and sociological analysis. He went wherever necessary to observe life as Rio de Janeiro struggled to enter the 20th century while clinging to its traditional imperial politics and lifestyle. He flaunted his homosexuality a century before it became socially acceptable. Here, for the first time in English, are João do Rio's reports on the bizarre confluence of European, North American, and African religions that found adherents in Rio de Janeiro. Candomblé, Spiritism, Positivism, Satanism, Judaism, the Cult of the Sea, the New Jerusalem, the Physiolaters, the Priestesses, the Evangelicals...they all fell under his scrutiny. Ana Lessa-Schmidt's translation of As Religiões no Rio, brilliant and true to the original, brings João do Rio's insight and revelations to full light. Just as João do Rio took readers down the dark streets of the low-life and into dark houses of worship, Lessa-Schmidt's translation takes readers into one of the world's most glorious and mysterious cities during its post-imperial heyday at the turn of the 20th century. This bilingual edition is in Portuguese and English.

By the author of THE HANDMAID'S TALE and ALIAS GRACE Pigs might not fly but they are strangely altered. So, for that matter, are wolves and racoons. A man, once named Jimmy, lives in a tree, wrapped in old bedsheets, now calls himself Snowman. The voice of Oryx, the woman he loved, teasingly haunts him. And the green-eyed Children of Crake are, for some reason, his responsibility. Praise for Oryx and Crake: 'In Jimmy, Atwood has created a great character: a tragic-comic artist of the future, part buffoon, part Orpheus. An adman who's a sad man; a jealous lover who's in perpetual mourning; a fantasist who can only remember the past' INDEPENDENT 'Gripping and remarkably imagined' LONDON REVIEW OF BOOKS

The Gospel According To The Apostles written by John F. MacArthur and has been published by Thomas Nelson this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-03-06 with Religion categories.

The apostles understood the Gospel as they learned from and personally lived alongside Jesus, and these lessons became the heart of their message to an unsaved world. But what does their perspective mean for modern Christians, and how can we read the Bible through their unique lens today? Following the release of his bestselling book The Gospel According to Jesus, Dr. MacArthur noticed that Christians were looking for practical advice, spiritual counsel, and accessible explanations of the Bible. And, most of all, they wanted help understanding their experiences within Christianity. Dr. MacArthur realized that by examining scripture from the perspective of the apostles themselves, even more Christians could come to know the Gospel as Jesus' earliest followers did. In his characteristic compelling style, Dr. MacArthur examines some of the key passages from the Epistles and Acts that reveal how the apostles first shared the gospel and how they unfolded the truths of salvation to the early church. Dr. MacArthur doesn't shy away from answering some of the difficult questions that he's been asked over the years, including: What is cheap grace? Have some Christians adopted a "no-lordship" theology? What must a person do to be considered righteous by God? How should we call people to faith? Do our works have any effect on our salvation? The Gospel According to the Apostles is a book for every Christian who wants to experience, understand, and fall in love with the same gospel that Jesus preached.

The G L D Spectacle written by Babatunde Lawal and has been published by University of Washington Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with Art categories.

This remarkable study explores the use of the visual and performing arts to promote nonviolence and social harmony in sub-Saharan Africa. It focuses on Gelede, a popular community festival of masquerade, dance, and song, held several times a year by the Yoruba of Southwestern Nigeria and the Republic of Benin. Babatunde Lawal, an art historian and African scholar who has taught in Nigeria, Brazil, and the United States, is himself a Yoruba and has taken an active part in Gelede. He writes from the perspective of an informed participant/observer of his own culture. Lawal bases his book on extensive field research--observations and interviews--conducted over more than two decades as well as on numerous published and unpublished scholarly sources. He casts significant new light on many previously obscure aspects of Gelede, and he demonstrates a useful methodological approach to the study of non-Western art. The book systematically covers the major aspects of the Gelede spectacle, presenting its cultural background and historical origins as preface to a vivid and detailed description of an actual performance. This is followed by a discussion of the iconography and aesthetics of costume, and an examination of the sculpted images on the masks. The book concludes with a discussion of the moral and aesthetic philosophy of Gelede and its responsiveness to technological and social change. The Gelede Spectacle is illustrated in color and black-and-white with over 100 field and museum photographs, including a rare sequence on the dressing of a masquerader. It offers, in addition, more than 60 Gelede song texts, proverbs, and divination verses, each in the original Yoruba as well as in translation. Lawal's interpretations of these pieces indicate the rich complexities of metaphor and analogy inherent in the Yoruba language and art.
