Il volume nasce nell’ambito mostra “Orme nei campi, Uomini e culture delle Terre di Mezzo” e della Giornata di studi che l’ha accompagnata e accoglie i risultati di una attenta ricerca sistematica svoltasi nel Decimano (le “terre di mezzo”), un territorio posto fra le città di Forlì, Ravenna, Cesena e Cervia. Il secondo volume della collana «IdA» vuole offrire un’analisi critica delle evidenze archeologiche emerse sulla vetta di Monte Giovi e presentare alcune considerazioni sulla natura del sito etrusco che, nel nome come nelle testimonianze, rimanda indubbiamente alla sfera religiosa. Negli ultimi decenni importanti ricerche hanno modificato profondamente il quadro delle conoscenze di questo territorio posto nella parte più settentrionale dell’Etruria propria, terra di passaggio e giunzione con il mondo padano. La nuova fase della ricerca archeologica, iniziata da Giuliano De Marinis negli anni Novanta del secolo scorso, dopo le indagini a I Monti (San Piero a Sieve) si è intensificata con gli scavi pluriennali condotti a Poggio Colla (Vicchio) e a San Martino a Poggio (Frascole), entrambi compresi nella valle del Mugello e contemporanei alle scoperte e alle ricerche effettuate sul versante fiorentino, come quelle a Pietramarina e a Gonfienti. Accanto agli isolati nuclei dell’aristocrazia orientalizzante nel territorio fiesolano sono così apparsi nuovi insediamenti e santuari, diversificate produzioni artigianali e importazioni; tutte rivelano nel loro insieme un quadro culturale complesso in parte ridefinito dalla recente pubblicazione di varie carte archeologiche. In questa ottica, l’edizione delle ricerche di Monte Giovi vuole essere un utile termine di confronto verso lo studio e l’auspicabile presentazione di tutti questi importanti contesti che non potranno che modificare e aggiornare molte delle considerazioni qui contenute.

The research in this book is the result of work begun in the summer of 2003 when the author became involved with the research team investigating the harbour area of Classe, in a joint project of the Department of History, Culture, Civilisation (then Department of Archaeology), the Superintendence of Archaeological Heritage of Emilia Romagna with the Fondazione RavennAntica. The author carried out the cleaning and conservation of metal objects from the excavation, particularly the coins. Part of this work was realised in a postgraduate dissertation that discussed the evidence of the 2002-2003 excavation campaigns in the harbour area of Classe. The archaeological research of the harbour carried out between 2001 and 2005 brought to light a total of 2564 coins, most of which are illegible and in alloys of copper, documenting a chronological range between the 2nd century BC and the 8th century AD. The investigation of the Basilica of San Severo started in the summer of 2006 and is still ongoing (2014), however, the coins included in this work are those retrieved between 2006 and 2010 only. In this case, the excavations brought to light a total of 224 coins, in alloys of silver, copper and billon, with a large variety of emissions that witness the settlement of the site between the 1st century BC and the 14th century AD, with a few, sporadic modern and contemporary finds of the 20th century. The archaeological contexts studied represent a focal point for the reconstruction of the history of the territory and cover a wide chronological span that is useful for defining the characteristics of the settlement (housing, productive areas etc.) and its evolution.

Da essa si irradia il controllo su tutta l’area della Curia Arcivescovile in grado di legare a sé in una rete variegata di rapporti i ceti elitari cittadini e rurali.

Paul the Deacon was undoubtedly one of the most prolific and gifted scholars of the early medieval period. Working for different patrons, first in his native Lombardy and then at the Frankish court, he left an impressive literary legacy, including a six-volume History of Rome and a History of the Lombards. All in all, Paul wrote more history than any of his contemporaries. He composed the Liber de episcopis Mettensibus around 784 at the behest of Angilram, bishop of Metz and chief counselor of Charlemagne. The text has received considerable attention from modern historians since it contains the first genealogy of the Carolingian family, one that establishes Arnulf, the seventh-century bishop of Metz, as Charlemagne's forefather. However, rather than being a simple work of royal propaganda, composed to support and legitimize the Carolingians, who had usurped the throne only thirty years earlier with Pippin III's coup in 751, the text subtly advances the prominent role of Metz within the Frankish kingdom. The present volume offers a new Latin edition of the Liber, including the late tenth-century interpolated section that both transformed the text and ensured its transmission. It also provides its first translation into a modern language. The introduction analyzes the textual strategies and the political claims at play in the Liber within the context of a reassessment of Angilram's episcopacy (768-791) in Metz. Book jacket.
