Orvieto, Umbria, Italy. Travel and Tourism. Out on a limb from the rest of Umbria, ORVIETO is perfectly placed between Rome and Florence to serve as a historical picnic for tour operators. Visitors flood into the town, drawn by the Duomo, one of the greatest Gothic buildings in Italy. However, once its facade and Signorelli's frescoes have been admired, the town's not quite as exciting as guides and word of mouth make out. This is partly to do with the gloominess of the dark volcanic rock from which Orvieto is built, and, more poetically, because it harbours something of the characteristic brooding atmosphere of Etruscan towns (it was one of the twelve-strong federation of Etruscan cities). Two thousand years on, it's not difficult to detect a more laidback atmosphere in the cities east of the Tiber founded by the Umbrians, a sunnier and easier-going people. All the same Orvieto is likeable, the setting superb, the Duomo unmissable, and the rest of the town good for a couple of hours' visit. And you could always indulge in its renowned white wine if you're stuck with time on your hands. Over New Year there's also the Umbria Jazz Winter festival: five days of marching bands and jazz performances. It is the first impressions of Orvieto from afar that tend to linger; its position is almost as remarkable and famous as its cathedral. The town, rising 300m sheer from the valley floor, sits on a tabletop plug of volcanic lava, one of four such remnants in the vicinity. It starts to look fairly average again from the dismal town around the train station, but hit the twisting 3km road up to the old centre and you begin to get a sense of its drama and one-off weirdness. Orvieto's old centre is compact and walkable: all of the main sights are within a twenty-minute stroll of the Duomo.

Perhaps it is the evocative nature of the place or a certain enchanted air (we might almost say "mystic") that you breathe to some extent everywhere, but sooner or later whoever visits Umbria ends up thinking: Saint Francis, that great, gentle, tender, and poetic Saint of happiness and humility could only have been born here in Umbria. In this place of ever-green, peaceful, and radiant nature, in these towns, the concept of "historical center" seems inadequate and reductive, so widespread is the monumental and artistic component in the cities of Umbria. Perugia, for example, the regional capital, to describe it is to lose oneself in the richness, complexity, and magnificence of its architectural and artistic treasures. This guide covers the region of Umbria, in Central Italy, called "the green heart of Italy." In detail, it covers Perugia, Assisi, Gubbio, Passignano Sul Trasimeno, Orvieto, Spello, Spoleto, Todi.

This guidebook by Italian walking expert Gillian Price describes 40 varied day walks in the region of Umbria, taking in the towns of Assisi, Perugia, Orvieto and Norcia. The walks range from 2.5km to 19km in length, the majority of the routes are circular, and several wonderful traverses have been included, with the return to the start point always possible by public transport. This guidebook also includes lots of practical information about recommended gear and maps to take and tips on local food, wildlife and culture, as well as useful tourist, accommodation and transport information and a brief Italian-English glossary. Set between Rome and Florence, the region is dotted with UNESCO World Heritage towns. The landscape, like that of neighbouring Tuscany, is one of rolling hills and deep woodlands, without the crowds of other well-known holiday regions in Italy. Walks cross flower meadows, wander down river valleys and also climb onto rugged hills and Apennine mountains, visiting Roman and Etruscan ruins as well as myriad ancient villages.

Il Bel Centro written by Michelle Damiani and has been published by Rialto Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-08-09 with Travel categories.

A witty and warm-hearted memoir of abandoning fast-paced American days in favor of discovering the Italian secrets of food, community, and life. Moving across the globe meant Michelle Damiani soon found herself untangling Italian customs, delighting in glorious regional cuisine (recipes included), and creating lasting friendships. From grandmothers eager to teach the ancient art of pasta making, to bakers tossing bread into fiery ovens with a song, to butchers extolling the benefits of pork fat, Il Bel Centro is rich with captivating characters and cultural insights. Throw in clinking glasses of Umbrian red with the local communists and a village all-nighter decorating the cobblestone streets with flower petals; as well as embarrassing language minefields and a serious summons to the mayor’s office, and you have all the ingredients for a spellbinding travel tale. Exquisitely observed, Il Bel Centro is an intimate celebration of small town Italy, as well as a thoughtful look at raising a family in a new culture and a fascinating story of finding a home. Ultimately though, this is a story about how travel can change you when you’re ready to let it. With laugh-out-loud situations and wanderlust-inspiring storytelling, Il Bel Centro is a joyous and life-affirming read that will have readers rushing to renew their passports. “This is one of the most beautiful book I’ve ever read.” “I absolutely couldn’t get enough of this book.” “This book made me want to pack my bags.” “I loved, loved this book. Fabulously written, engaging, and entertaining.” “A magical read.”

Perugia Guide, Umbria, Italy. The History, and Travel Information. Lifted by a hill above a valley patterned with fields, where the river Tiber runs swift and clear, Perugia is Umbria's petite and immediately likeable capital. Its historic center, rises in a helter-skelter of cobbled alleys, arched stairways and piazzas framed by magnificent palazzi (mansions). History seeps through every shadowy corner of these streets and an aimless wander through them can feel like time travel. The closest tourist destinations to Perugia are the lovely pilgrimage town of Assisi just 20 minutes away by train and Lake Trasimeno. A circular tour of the Umbria region could take in a range of pretty historic towns: Assisi, Spello, Spoleto, Orvieto, Lake Trasimeno and Gubbio. There are also plenty of smaller towns and villages where travelers can potter and pass a pleasant couple of hours. Deruta is famous for its ceramics and is a good place to view Italian majolica in a museum and to buy in local shops.

Marlena di Blasi seduced readers to fall in love with Venice, then Tuscany, with her popular and critically acclaimed books A Thousand Days in Venice and A Thousand Days in Tuscany. Now she takes readers on a journey into the heart of Orvieto, an ancient city in the less-trodden region of Umbria. Rich with history and a vivid sense of place, her tale is by turns romantic and sensual, joyous and celebratory, as she and her husband search for a home in this city on a hill—finding one that turns out to be the former ballroom of a dilapidated sixteenth-century palazzo. Along the way, de Blasi befriends an array of colorful characters, including cooks and counts and shepherds and a lone violinist, cooking her way into the hearts of her Umbrian neighbors. Brimming with life and kissed by romance, The Lady in the Palazzo perfectly captures the essence of a singular place and offers up a feast—and the recipes to prepare it!—for readers of all stripes.
