Para a autora, o novo voluntariado é uma construção. Neste livro, essa construção foi tomada em dois sentidos. O primeiro diz respeito às relações entre atores sociais que se reuniram para lhe dar a sustentação que o manteve no horizonte público com a visibilidade que alcançou. O segundo refere-se à sua aparência de novidade, isto é, à elaboração de um discurso institucional que deu forma a esse novo voluntariado, atribuindo-lhe qualidades, descrevendo suas formas passadas, identificando-o a valores, posicionamentos e atitudes determinados. Embora seja possível identificar um cenário de mudanças e de temas novos para além da área em que o novo voluntariado surgiu, o foco recaiu sobre os temas que lhe eram mais próximos - aqueles relacionados à proposição de novas formas de entender e enfrentar problemas sociais, especialmente os que diziam respeito à solução das desigualdades sociais e aumento da pobreza.

In an age of upheaval and challenged faith, traditional heroes are hard to come by, and harder still to love, with their bloodstained hands and backs unbowed by the consequences of their actions. Through penetrating readings of key works of modern European literature, Victor Brombert shows how a new kind of hero—the antihero—has arisen to replace the toppled heroic model. Though they fail, by design, to live up to conventional expectations of mythic heroes, antiheroes are not necessarily "failures." They display different kinds of courage more in tune with our time and our needs: deficiency translated into strength, failure experienced as honesty, dignity achieved through humiliation.
