Aristotle in Coimbra is the first book to cover the history of both the College of Arts in Coimbra and its most remarkable cultural product, the Cursus Conimbricensis, examining early Jesuit pedagogy as performed in one of the most important colleges run by the Society of Jesus in the sixteenth century. The first complete philosophical textbook published by a Jesuit college, the Cursus Conimbricensis (1592–1606) was created by some of the most renowned early Jesuit philosophers and comprised seven volumes of commentaries and disputations on Aristotle’s writings, which had formed the foundation of the university philosophy curriculum since the Middle Ages. In Aristotle in Coimbra, Cristiano Casalini demonstrates the connection between educational practices in a sixteenth-century college and the structure of a scholastic philosophical commentary, providing insight into this particular form of late-scholastic Aristotelianism through historiographical discourse. This book provides both a narrative of the historical background behind the publication of the Cursus and an analysis of the major philosophical and educational issues addressed by its seven volumes. This book discusses the Aristotelian setting of Thomas Hobbes' main work on natural philosophy, De Corpore (1655). Leijenhorst's study puts particular emphasis on the second part of the work, entitled Philosophia Prima. Although Hobbes presents his mechanistic philosophy of nature as an outright replacement of Aristotelian physics, he continued to use the vocabulary and arguments of sixteenth and seventeenth-century Aristotelianism. Leijenhorst shows that while in some cases this common vocabulary hides profound conceptual innovations, in other cases Hobbes' self-proclaimed "new" philosophy is simply old wine in new sacks. Leijenhorst's book substantially enriches our insight in the complexity of the rise of modern philosophy and the way it struggled with the Aristotelian heritage.

Unified by the theoretical and hermeneutical arch that links physics to metaphysics, the three subjects here analysed, belonging to the famous Commentarii Collegii Conimbricensis Socíetatis lesu (1592-1606) - colour, nature and knowledge - strike the reader by their modernity. The first, reveals Coimbra productivity, regarding Manuel de Góis' theory of colours, so similar to Goethe's; the second, underlines ali the aesthetical possibilities the Coimbra Commentaries may confer to some theoretical domains as anthropology, cosmology or even science; lastly, after studying a theological theme that pertains to the doctrine of the knowledge, "separation", to the reader is proposed a surprisingly interpretation: the Cartesian tone ofthis precise theme.

No presente livro optou-se por compreender a significação da didática conimbricense tomando-se a filosofia como perspetiva formal para essa compreensão e como ponto a partir do qual se pode lançar a pergunta crucial: o Cursus conimbricensis é o majestoso destroço de uma escolástica destinada a ser varrida a breve trecho pelo sensismo, pelo racionalismo e mais tarde pelas ciências experimentais, ou a sua abordagem, metafísica, sempre pronta a comprometer-se com a mutabilidade e a precariedade dos destinos humanos, tem ainda muito para nos dizer? E a contradição insanável do espírito jesuíta entre a vocação “heroica” para as grandes empresas, as grandes viagens e os grandes martírios – explicada nos monólogos atormentados dos colegiais transformados em prima-donas de teatro – e a tendência prática para a mediação, a adaptação, os bons negócios e a diplomacia internacional não poderia ter tido a sua origem justamente na sua formação? O estudo da didática conimbricense poderá, em suma, dar-nos muitas chaves para descodificar a história, precisamente em relação àqueles eventos e ações tão paradoxais que não podem ser explicados pela estratégia, e dos quais a Europa moderna parece alimentar-se avidamente, como de um prato apurado, para paladares fortes.
