Fluxo e refluxo é resultado de quase vinte anos de pesquisa de Pierre Verger. O detalhado e criterioso estudo foi apresentado pela primeira vez na Sorbonne, em 1966, como a tese de doutorado do antropólogo e etnólogo francês. Lançada no Brasil apenas em 1987, a obra rapidamente se tornou um marco historiográfico: a partir de levantamentos feitos na costa da África e de cartas do negreiro José Francisco dos Santos, conhecido como Alfaiate, Verger reconstrói a rota de compra e venda de escravos entre a Bahia e o golfo do Benim no período da colonização portuguesa, e recupera os desdobramentos culturais dessa relação comercial. "Apesar dessas duas comunidades terem praticamente perdido contato a partir do início do século XX, seus integrantes tornaram-se, em termos culturais, africanos do Brasil e brasileiros da África", diz Pierre Verger. Knowledge of the pragmatici sheds new light on pragmatic normative literature (mainly from the religious sphere), a genre crucial for the formation of normative orders in early modern Ibero-America. Long underrated by legal historical scholarship, these media – manuals for confessors, catechisms, and moral theological literature – selected and localised normative knowledge for the colonial worlds and thus shaped the language of normativity. The eleven chapters of this book explore the circulation and the uses of pragmatic normative texts in the Iberian peninsula, in New Spain, Peru, New Granada and Brazil. The book reveals the functions and intellectual achievements of pragmatic literature, which condensed normative knowledge, drawing on medieval scholarly practices of ‘epitomisation’, and links the genre with early modern legal culture.
