Wittgenstein concluse la prima parte delle "Ricerche filosofiche" nel 1945. A partire dal 1946, si concentrò sui temi della filosofia della psicologia, accumulando le osservazioni che compongono questo volume, apparso nel 1980. Esse vanno lette, per un verso, in parallelo con la seconda parte delle "Ricerche", dove alcune di queste note andarono a confluire. Ma, per altro verso, esse valgono come indicazione delle nuove vie cercate da Wittgenstein negli ultimi anni, anche al di là delle "Ricerche". In piena evidenza apparirà in questi scritti una certa impronta antropologica, se con essa intendiamo la convinzione che i problemi della teoria della conoscenza – a cui Wittgenstein aveva dedicato tutta la sua vita – non possano essere affrontati senza considerare quei «binari fissi su cui corre tutto il nostro pensiero». È questo il Wittgenstein paziente, minuzioso, acutissimo, che non parla soltanto di logica ma dei nostri sentimenti elementari – dal dolore alla sorpresa – e del modo in cui li esprimiamo correntemente, non stancandosi mai di individuarvi cose che rimangono da capire. Il presupposto di questo Wittgenstein estremo, per noi oggi particolarmente affascinante, è che «la malattia del pensiero deve seguire il suo corso naturale» – e di fronte a essa il filosofo deve contare soltanto su una «lenta guarigione».

La psicoanalisi è una scienza? E soprattutto, che cosa vogliamo sapere quando ci poniamo questa domanda? Presupposto di questo lavoro è che non sia possibile riflettere sullo statuto della psicoanalisi senza partire dall’attualità del dibattito psicoanalitico e dalle questioni cruciali della filosofia della scienza. Il quesito sulla scientificità della psicoanalisi dovrebbe allora essere declinato attraverso domande più specifiche: che cos’è l’oggetto della psicoanalisi, alla luce del pluralismo dei modelli metapsicologici? Che rapporto c’è tra psicoanalisi e psichiatria, e più in generale tra psicoterapia e neurobiologia? Come si legano le ricerche sull’efficacia della psicoanalisi con la riflessione epistemologica sul suo statuto? E infine, in che modo la riflessione filosofica può aiutarci a comprendere la natura della pratica psicoanalitica? A questi interrogativi si cercherà di dare una risposta attraverso una riflessione sui principali temi di discussione della filosofia della scienza, a partire da un’analisi del rapporto tra modelli metapsicologici e casi clinici.

This anthology translates eighteen papers by Italian philosopher and experimental psychologist Paolo Bozzi (1930-2003), bringing his distinctive and influential ideas to an English-speaking audience for the first time. The papers cover a range of methodological and experimental questions concerning the phenomenology of perception and their theoretical implications, with each one followed by commentary from leading international experts. In his laboratory work, Bozzi investigated visual and auditory perception, such as our responses to pendular motion and bodies in freefall, afterimages, transparency effects, and grouping effects in dot lattices and among sounds (musical notes). Even if the width and the depth of Brentano’s intellectual legacy are now quite well known, those asked to list the principal philosophers of the 19th century, very rarely do mention his name. We may call this puzzle the problem of Brentano’s 'invisibility'. One component of the Brentano’s puzzle is that a number of Brentano’s outstanding pupils achieved their own success and founded their own schools. Suffice to mention Husserl’s phenomenology, Twardowski’s Lvov-Warsaw school and Meinong’s Graz school. The personal success and academic recognition attained by these exponents of Brentano’s school (in the broad sense) have come to obscure their common origins. The oblivion into which Franz Brentano’s thought fell was in part due also to the subsequent split between analytic philosophy and phenomenology. The book reconstructs elements of the 'map' of the Brentanists, revitalizing knowledge of the theoretical complexity of their debates, of their unitariness, and of their style. Last but not least, analyses of the relevance of those discussions for contemporary philosophical and scientific debate are also considered.
