Annotation Topics presented were: Ultrastructural features of the two maculae with special emphasis on the neuromediators involved in vestibular signal processing; Review of the physiology of the otolith organs and some fascinating and unexpected roles of these structures in current clinical symptoms; Principal otolith-related syndromes drawing on clinical experience; Development of thoughts on the role of otoliths in movement perception; Clinical and instrumental investigation of otolith function and a critical appraisal for the tests used in vestibulometric practice with emphasis on the experience in eccentric rotatory testing; Use of the subjective visual vertical test, off-vertical axis rotation and click-evoked myogenic potentials as tools for functional investigations of the otolith organs. This volume provides an exhaustive view of the field in vestibulology, not only for neurophysiologists, otologists, neurologists, and kinesitherapists who are specialized in vestibular rehabilitation, but also for geriatrists and specialists in space medicine.

Measurements of ocular counterrolling by the photographic method provide specific and valid otolith function information. The precision of the test method has extended the usefulness of ocular counterrolling as an indicator of otolith function of individuals with severe macular destruction as well as normals subjected to conditions which act physiologically to deafferent these organs such as near weightlessness of aerospace flight. The otolithic membrane is extremely fragile and is easily destroyed by post-mortem changes, tonic change, strong chemicals, et cetera. The routine technique of temporal bone preparation usually includes the use of a strong fixative and decalcifier; therefore, the structural preservation of this structure in histological slides is uncertain. An attempt was made to preserve the otolithic architecture as naturally as possible. In studying squirrel monkey temporal bones the results obtained with three different decalcifiers are compared. The best architectural preservation of the otolithic end organ was obtained after 10% formalin fixation, dehydration, celloidin embedding, and 10% EDTA decalcification. The morphological features of this end organ are discussed from the functional viewpoint. It is confirmed that, except for the otoconia, basically both otolith and semicircular canal end organs have almost similar components. (Author).

This volume summarizes knowledge of static and dynamic processing of ototlith activity in the labyrinth and provides information about otolith processing through the vestibular nuclei and vestibulo-cerebellum. It also addresses how otolith information is processed in the cortex.

Observations were made on normal subjects and deaf persons with bilateral labyrinthine defects (L-D subjects) under three different conditions in parabolic flight: (1) free-floating, (2) restrained in a Fiberglas mold, and (3) 'standing' on the overhead during a motified parabola generating about -0.05 G unit. There were interindividual differences in the reactions among the normal but not among the L-D subjects. Some normal but none of the L-D subjects experienced a reversal of their personal orientation with regard to up-down under all three conditions. This 'reversal' was considered to have its genesis in the vestibular organs, probably the otolith apparatus. Our findings are in accord with Russian reports describing feelings of inversion among cosmonauts in orbital flight. Attention is called to the necessity of distinguishing between information furnished by touch-pressure, kinesthesis, and stereagnosis under ordinary conditions and agravic touch-pressure, agravic kinethesis, and agravic steragnosis. Tropical Fish Otoliths Information For Assessment Management And Ecology written by Bridget S. Green and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-08-07 with Science categories.

Techniques and theory for processing otoliths from tropical marine fish have developed only recently due to an historic misconception that these organisms could not be aged. Otoliths are the most commonly used structures from which daily, seasonal or annual records of a fish’s environmental history are inferred, and are also used as indicators of migration patterns, home range, spatial distribution, stock structure and life history events. A large proportion of projects undertaken on tropical marine organisms involve removal and processing of calcified structures such as otoliths, statoliths or vertebrae to retrieve biological, biochemical or genetic information. Current techniques and principles have evolved rapidly and are under constant modification and these differ among laboratories, and more particularly among species and within life history stages. Tropical fish otoliths: Information for assessment, management and ecology is a comprehensive description of the current status of knowledge about otoliths in the tropics. This book has contributions from leading experts in the field, encompassing a tropical perspective on daily and annual ageing in fish and invertebrates, microchemistry, interpreting otolith microstructure and using it to back-calculate life history events, and includes a treatise on the significance of validating periodicity in otoliths.

To determine the influence of the otolith organs on visually perceived direction of space the constant and variable errors of normal persons and deaf persons with bilateral labyrinthine defects during nineteen positions of body tilt within plus or minus 90 degrees of gravitational vertical were compared. The general perceptual pattern was similar for the two groups, although that of the labyrinthine-defective group was found to be more variable, and greater E- and A-effects were manifested during several of the tilt positions. A significantly larger E-effect was observed in those subjects (L-Ds) with little or no ocular counterroll. (Author).
