The rapid advancement of unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) and their continued integration into the U.S. Navy's fleet will make these autonomous systems an important element of undersea exploration. This work studies hybrid UUVs powered by Otto Fuel II internal combustion and battery electric propulsion system. To further explore the potential improved endurance, a simulation model was developed to evaluate energy consumption (i.e., vehicle drag), energy efficiency (i.e., power system inefficiencies), and determine the optimal size of some components. The simulation calculated output variables of interest--energy usage, required power, mass, and others-- based on a given speed and depth profile. With a focus on Navy applications where the vehicle may need to remain quiet at specific intervals, the simulation would be required to operate on electric power only during these intervals. Several mission profiles are simulated and the hybrid powertrain is tailored to provide the desired performance. It is found that when battery specific energy is restricted to less than about 200 watt-hour/kg and mission profiles that include low speed operation followed by a high speed dash are potential applications for hybrid Otto Fuel II combustion and battery powered UUVs.
