Since its foundation, Sadberk Hanim Museum has continued to expand the core collection that belonged to Badberk Koc with the finest examples of Ottoman period embroidery. The result is an outstanding embroidery collection consisting of nearly two thousand pieces dating from the 17th to 20th centuries. Embroidery is one of the oldest decorative arts and in the Ottoman period was used on very idverse objects ranging from clothing and domestic textiles to military equipment. As a result embroidery developed into a professional craft whose artisans produced equisite work of high artistic merit. Finely worked embroidery in beautiful designs and colour schemes were produced with patience, skill and creativity. The "Skill of the Hand, Delight of the Eye" exhibition and accompanying catalogue features 167 examples of different types embroidered in a variety of techniques, selected to illustrate the rich diversity of embroidered articles that were an essential part of Ottoman life. They cover a period of nearly three hundred years and show the changes in technique, style and design that took place between 17th and 20th centuries.

This book is a celebration of the extensive collection of Ottoman embroidery at the V and A which ranges from the middle of the 16th century to 1900. In addition to illustrating over 100 major pieces, an introductory text puts the collection in context, explaining who the Ottomans were and their impact on Europe. The embroideries themselves include pieces such as sashes, kerchiefs and scarves which were made to satisfy the requirements of the Ottoman household and are strongly redolent of an exotic way of life. The embroideries can be divided into pre- and post-1720, when the Ottomans made peace with Central and Western Europe, and incorporated many aspects of Western art into their textile traditions. It was not until the 19th century however, that Ottoman embroidery in the form of towels and napkins began to appear in public and private collections in Britain. The book is illustrated with 145 embroideries which are split into the four most characteristic Ottoman techniques- surface darning, laid and couched, double running and double darning. Above all it is the unique double-sided embroideries that are fascinating to Western observers where the same basic stitch has been used over five centuries. In 1720, an Ottoman ambassador was sent to the court of the Child King Louis XV to observe Western civilization and report on what he saw and how it could be applied in the Ottoman Empire. Based on the accounts of this ambassador, East Encounters West studies the impact of the West on the Ottoman empire and the impact of this Ottoman embassy on the two societies. In France, the presence of the embassy yielded only a brief fashion of Turquerie, whereas in the Ottoman empire, it yielded the first official printing press, signalling an important step toward Western style. Göçek here assesses the reasons behind these differential impacts through three factors: the Western technological advances, consequent commercial expansion, and the different reactions of various social groups in the Ottoman empire to these developments. Her analysis reveals a far-reaching and complex Westernization process that permeated Turkish society as it was approved and imported by dignitaries and eventually passed onto average households. Sketching the process of Westernization from the perspective of Easterners, this unique book throws new light on the cultural differences between these two major civilizations and on the nature of cultural transmission and diffusion.
