Excerpt from Our Birds and Their Nestlings In most cases they are birds of conspicuous plumage, these being most easily recognised. To avoid monotomy, all decriptions have been relegated to the appendix. An attempt has been made to enlist sympathy with, as well as to awaken interest in, bird life, for the interest without sympathy, in this case, would only encourage the naturally destructive instincts of childhood. For the purpose of showing the importance of birds in literature, as well as for the purpose of calling into play the aesthetic faculty, poems and legends have been included. All hackneyed poems have been avoided. For their generous permission to use valuable copy-righted material, intebtedness is gratefully acknowledged to Houghton, Miffin & Co., Small, Maynard & Co., D. Appleton & Co., and Our Dumb Animals Publishing Co.; to Mrs. Margaret Sangster, Mr. Eben Rexford, Mr. Clinton Scollard, and Mr. Frank Dempster Sherman. For the photographic illustrations, I am especially indebted to Mr. Francis Hobart Herrick, an earnest bird student and an enthusiastic photographer, who has kindly permitted me the use of some of the remarkably fine photographs used in illustrating his interesting book, The Home Life of Wild Birds, a book with which all bird students are already familiar. Mr. Frank M. Chapman, Mr. A. R. Dugmore, Mr. John Cameron, Miss Ruth Shutts, Mr. James Miller, and the Recreation Publishing Co., have also assisted me in the same way. Want of space precludes the individual mention of a number of my associates to whom I am indebted for both counsel and good-natured critism. Excerpt from Birds and Their Nests The birds in these pictures of ours have all nests, which is as it should be; for how could the bird rear its young without its little home and soft little bed, any more than children could be comfortably brought up without either a bed to lie upon, or a home in which to be happy. Excerpt from Home and Foreign Birds: A Book for Young Children Tee Grebe is one of the most curious of the Divers known in England, and is to be met with in the fens of the Midland Counties, and in some parts of Scotland. The legs of the bird are placed so far back, that it walks, or rather waddles, in the most awkward manner, and when it rests sits nearly upright. The feet are not webbed, and it uses the toes as paddles to swim in the water. It feeds on fish, for which it dives very boldly. On the floating weeds it makes a nest, which is often quite wet, but the bird seems to feel no discomfort, but hatches her four eggs in her little floating mansion. The flesh of the Grebe is fishy, but the skins are of some value. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Nests and Eggs of Familiar British Birds, Described and Illustrated: With an Account of the Haunts and Habits of the Feathered Architects, and Their Times and Modes of Building Ir may at first strike our young readers that this is a question very easily answered; if they think so, let them try What sort of an answer they can give to it, and if they break down in the definition, we will endeavour to help them, as we are told in the old fable, Jupiter did the waggoner; but it is best for young people to try, and, for that matter, old people too; let them never believe that they can't do a thing - where there's a will there's a way. Many a boy that will take a deal of pains, and incur no inconsiderable risk of life and limb, to climb up a tree after a bird's nest, finds it too much trouble to read and learn about the habits of the creature he is thus ready to deprive of its warm comfortable home and beautiful eggs. He cannot tell you, if you ask him, of What the nest is composed, nor how, nor when it was built, much less can he answer the question which we have just put to our readers. Excerpt from Birds and Their Ways But Miss Harson taught her pupils to use their eyes and ears, and their tongues too, to some purpose. Sometimes an imagin ary journey would be proposed, and then they all traveled to some foreign country to learn about things that lived or grew there; and this the children always enjoyed very much. Excerpt from Birds Homes: The Nests, Eggs and Breeding Habits of the Land Birds Breeding in the Eastern United States: With Hints on the Rearing and Photographing of Young Birds Having birds in this way affords almost the only means of studying the remarkable individuality possessed by different members of the same species. That each bird has a character peculiar to itself may be doubted by some, but I have never seen two individuals showing the same peculiarities. Two rose breasted grosbeaks that have been reared together from the same nest, and are now eighteen months old, are different in almost every way. One is intensely jealous and objects to attention being paid to any other bird; the other seems not to know what jealousy means. One wants to sleep at night; the other keeps up a perpetual jumping from perch to perch until all hours. The female (who has most of the bad traits) never lets her mate have any little tid-bit in the way of food; no matter how much she has, she immediately seizes whatever is given to her better natured companion. So it is with all the other birds; one will be naturally wild and timid; another knows no fear; one, though tame, cannot endure being touched; another, like a bluebird l have, wants to be handled most of the time, and is quite content if allowed to sit quietly (and go to sleep) inside a partly closed hand.
