Excerpt from Twenty-First Lincoln Birthday Service: Memorial Hall, Chicago, Wednesday, February 12th, 1920 In these concrete and tragic days of the world's need, when there Is a call for leaders who can see clearly, wilt Thou help us fill our minds with something of the same devotion and fidelity to our work in our generation as the men did in those other days. Bless Thy servant who brings to us the message of the Lord, and grant that we may gather out of these associations and the day and the message, inspiration for our work tomorrow. And we pray, our Father, that we may in our home land. Here, be able to make peace for the men of all races and lands, and assure to them the freedom and the opportunity, the prophecy of which came in '76, the possibility of which was made certain in '61, the extension of which came in '98 and 1917. Our Father, we pray that Thou wilt help us to be faithful to our God and to our fellows. Let Thy bene diction rest upon the men under whose auspices we are met today. Grant to them the courage, the vigor and peace in these later days. May they be assured that the things for which they stood are appreciated and will preserve to the end of time. We ask it in our Lord's name and for His sake. Amen. President pitcher: The next on our program is a solo and chorus by the Junior Companions of the Loyal Legion. The mind and imagination of the people personify ideas and measures in their most conspicuous representatives. While Washington stands clearer on the hundredth anniversary of his death, which occurred only a few Weeks ago, as representing the construe tive forces which created modern representative government and the power of the people, Abraham Lincoln will stand as the representative of this marvellous advance in emancipation and reconstruction. In these days when it is common to try to build parties, and create issues upon class hatred, Lincoln stands as the representative of all classes, if there be such in our country. [applause. Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln: A Response at the Annual Banquet of the Marquette Club, of Chicago, on the Birthday of Abraham Lincoln, February 12th, 1895 You do well, therefore, to celebrate the day of his birth. You are wise in pledging this club to a new and increasing fealty to him and to his life. We are in danger of forgetting plain old truths. The amateur thinker is in Our midst, mistaking the noise and tumult of modern life for its sober reality. The age is restless. There is a profound discontent, partly right and partly wrong; but they greatly err who imagine that the white crest upon the wave is a true measure of the depths below. The doctrinaire whose lips have hardly been moistened by the dew of wisdom thinks that he, above all others, has a message. And thus it happens thatthings are made to seem something which in reality are nothing. It is well, perhaps, that it should be so. Let us not complain, for liberty is wide and every voice must have its say. But when the crickets pipe and chir rup it is pleasant to think that somewhere there is peace, and in the heat of summer it is sweet to rest in the shade of an illustrious name. He was not of an age but for all time, was the noble tribute of Ben Jonson to Shake speare, and it is almost as widely true of him who was the gentlest, bravest, noblest leader that ever wore the name of American citizen.
