Mike O’Gara is 15 years old when he is sentenced to be transported to America aboard a ship carrying other prisoners and bond slaves. When the ship is badly damaged and left sinking by a horrendous storm, 9 men and Mike head for the Azores in a skiff with little water and food. A few days later, a fish is caught and shared, while the bloody, oily guts are rubbed on 5 of the sun burnt men, who later bathe in the water near the skiff. Sharks are attracted, and the bathers are eaten. After 19 days in the skiff, the 5 survivors are picked up by a British a merchant ship headed for America. At Fredricksburgh, Virginia, Mike stands on the auction block and is sold as an indentured servant committed to 4 years labor at Newhart Plantation as a stable man. When the Master of the plantation sees that his daughter is attracted to Mike, he enlists him in the Virginia militia, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel George Washington, who has been ordered to drive the French out of the fort they have established at the Forks of the Ohio (Pittsburgh). This ignites what becomes The French and Indian War! Although Mike is badly wounded, he recovers completely, goes through many dangerous adventures and becomes Captain of General Washington’s bodyguard in the Revolutionary War, when the Continental Army forces the British Army to board ships in Boston Harbor and leave America.

In 1768, Philadelphia physician Benjamin Rush stood before the empty throne of King George III, overcome with emotion as he gazed at the symbol of America's connection with England. Eight years later, he became one of the fifty-six men to sign the Declaration of Independence, severing America forever from its mother country. Rush was not alone in his radical decision -- many of those casting their votes in favor of independence did so with a combination of fear, reluctance, and even sadness. In Our Lives, Our Fortunes and Our Sacred Honor, acclaimed historian Richard R. Beeman examines the grueling twenty-two-month period between the meeting of the Continental Congress on September 5, 1774 and the audacious decision for independence in July of 1776. As late as 1774, American independence was hardly inevitable -- indeed, most Americans found it neither desirable nor likely. When delegates from the thirteen colonies gathered in September, they were, in the words of John Adams, "a gathering of strangers." Yet over the next two years, military, political, and diplomatic events catalyzed a change of unprecedented magnitude: the colonists' rejection of their British identities in favor of American ones. In arresting detail, Beeman brings to life a cast of characters, including the relentless and passionate John Adams, Adams' much-misunderstood foil John Dickinson, the fiery political activist Samuel Adams, and the relative political neophyte Thomas Jefferson, and with profound insight reveals their path from subjects of England to citizens of a new nation. A vibrant narrative, Our Lives, Our Fortunes and Our Sacred Honor tells the remarkable story of how the delegates to the Continental Congress, through courage and compromise, came to dedicate themselves to the forging of American independence.

• Chapter 1: To cross the great unknown to harvest love is a challenge we all face. • Chapter 8: You cannot close your heart, ignore the hurting world around you, and be content with life. • Chapter 32: Love is real. The question is whether we are real enough to embrace love. • Chapter 21: We hide inside shells of denials and go under shades of lies to avoid the piercing rays of truth. • Chapter 6: To share love in the arena of life, you open the vault of your heart and disburse gems polished by God. • Chapter 11: Regret robs your life. It is a thief you allow to rummage your soul and steals the precious life you have been given. • Chapter 27: In the face of adversity, you are forced to define yourself. You are given a chance to show your essence. The depth of your heart exposed and the size of your faith revealed. • Chapter 2: Love binds feelings on the solid rock of faith and ties passion within the sacrificial cord of promise. • Chapter 34: Life grows cold when you do not put ideas in the furnace of adversity. When you tarry, dreams become wavering titillations of the soul, and aspirations turn into useless trinkets of the mind. • Chapter 16: When we fail to follow God, we drift in a sea of confusion, struggle in the field of opportunity, and wither in the garden of life.
