Sign languages are non-written languages. Given that the use of digital media and video recordings in documenting sign languages started only some 30 years ago, the life stories of Deaf elderly signers born in the 1930s-1940s have – except for a few scattered fragments in film – not been documented and are therefore under serious threat of being lost. The chapters compiled in this volume document important aspects of past and present experiences of elderly Deaf signers across Europe, as well as in Israel and the United States. Issues addressed include (i) historical events and how they were experienced by Deaf people, (ii) issues of identity and independence, (iii) aspects of language change, (iv) experiences of suppression and discrimination. The stories shared by elderly signers reveal intriguing, yet hidden, aspects of Deaf life. On the negative side, these include experiences of the Deaf in Nazi Germany and occupied countries and harsh practices in educational settings, to name a few. On the positive side, there are stories of resilience and vivid memories of school years and social and professional life. In this way, the volume contributes in a significant way to the preservation of the cultural and linguistic heritage of Deaf communities and sheds light on lesser known aspects against an otherwise familiar background. This publication has been made possible within the SIGN-HUB project, which has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.

Tracing Japanese Leftist Political Activism (1957–2017) tells the story of the Japanese Red Army (JRA), a militant left-wing group founded in 1971 which was involved in numerous terrorist attacks. It traces the origins of the group in the Japanese New Left in the 1960s and looks at Red Army groups of the early 1970s in Japan, such as the Red Army Faction, and the United Red Army which became infamous for murdering its own members. The book also examines the JRA's trans- and international links with other militant groups including the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, as well as the networks of intellectuals and fellow activists who supported them. This book is a compilation of poems written by inspiration by Professor Emeritus Charles Alan Long, that reflect a long career of scholarship with many historical and lyrical expressions hidden by layers of research and teaching. A chronology of sorts, it begins in Dr. Long’s youth in college over sixty years ago, and continued until he was 80, as a teacher, professor of research, museum director, soldier, with success in bio-mathematics, natural history, as a philosopher, critic, and member of a progressive family. Some current, practical problems studied from the vantage of evolutionist, ecologist, biblical critic, naturalist, and offended American include the sudden rise of marijuana, political rhetoric, usury beyond decency, and by liberals and conservatives alike the erosion of personal liberty, especially of speech and universities. But the poems, from laments, to loves, to joy, to pathos and death, poverty to wealth, nature, art, music, and poetry itself are presented in almost musical sadness or joy. The history of an intellectual’s scholarly travels, whereas some poems are for children, some for society, some attacking evils, some praising good people, with merit even in deference to religions, many nations, and his beloved homeland. The poems are in large part visits into nostalgia and sentiment. Cultures of many peoples in many nations are described, as are many situations in America. There is, of course, an American core, but surely this poet loves good peoples and the history of Greece, France, Scotland, Africa, Russia, and other places. Loves genuine for many women inspired many lovely poems, a lot of romance. But profound in its argument is love for the poor and unhappy people, love for art, nature, philosophy, even sports, science and math, even religions. It becomes unified by reason, his active caring, and his bursts of singing. Much attention is given to geography, history, science and nature.

Mental and material reconstruction was an ongoing process after World War II, and it still is. This volume combines a detailed treatment of post-war cultural reconstruction in Finnish Lapland – a region on the geographical and historical margins of its nation-state – with comparative case studies of silent post-war memory from other European countries The contributors shed light on key aspects of cultural reconstruction generally: disruptions of national narratives, difficulties of post-war cultural demobilisation, sites of memory, visual narratives of post-war reconstruction, and manifestations of trans-generational experiences of cultural reconstruction. Exploration of the less conspicuous aspects of mental reconstruction reveals various forms of post-war silence and silencing which have halted or hindered different groups of people in their mental return to peace. Rather than focusing on the “executive level” of material reconstruction, the volume turns its gaze towards those who experienced the return to peace in the mental, societal, and historical margins: members of ethnic, religious, and cultural minorities, women, and children. This book creatively and critically explores the figure of the flâneur and its place within educational scholarship. The flâneur is used as a generative metaphor and a prompt for engaging the unknown through embodied engagement, the politics of space, mindful walking and ritual. The chapters in this collection explore sensorial qualities of place and place-making, urban spaces and places, walking as relational practice, walking as ritual, thinking photographically, the creative and narrative qualities of flâneurial walking, and issues of power, gender, and class in research practices. In doing so, the editors and contributors examine how flâneurial walking can be viewed as a creative, relational, place-making practice. Engaging the flâneur as an influential and recurring historical figure allows and expands upon generative ways of thinking about educational inquiry. Furthermore, attending to the flâneur provides a way of provoking researchers to recognize and consider salient political issues that impact educational access and equity.

This book charts the development of the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) from 1954 as both unorthodox military institutions and servants of a civil society that decries militarism.
