Excerpt from Our Living Land There was so much land, there seemed no end to its bounty. Men killed off the buffalo and then the passenger pigeon, cut over the forest and let the sunlight in to dry up the swamp, plowed the new ground and called it prog ress. Then somebody missed the wind whispering through the pine trees and stopped to wonder. Crops failed, springs dried up, gullies scarred the hillsides and the rivers ran muddy red. Excerpt from Life in Prairie Land The following work was commenced with the intention of writing one or two brief sketches descriptive of Life at the West. And until some hundred and fifty pages were written, I never contemplated the possibility of extending them to a volume. At that point, I was so far from having said all I felt, that Ivery willingly re signed myself to the current of my feelings and wrote on. To those who read the volume first, and after ward, in some idle moment, turn back to the preface, I need not say that I have been impelled in every step by love of my theme. That will have been apparent enough to them, without any such declaration. I have loved the West, and it still claims my preference over all other portions of the earth. Its magnitude, its fertili ty, the kindliness of its climate, the variety and excellence of its productions are unrivaled in our own country, if not on the globe. Excerpt from Our Remaining Land: We Can Use It and Save It Productive land is essential to the well - being of any nation and the people living in the nation. Most nations do not have enough good land now; they have wasted too much of it in the past. We are more fortunate in the United States; but, ev'en here, we do not have any to spare. And, we have been destroy ing our good land at a prodigal rate. Good topsoil and water are the main things that make land productive. You cannot make fertile topsoil in a few years on most land. It takes nature centuries to do it. But topsoil can be removed from good land in a few years by careless farming; it has been removed or severely damaged on millions of acres of our American land. When the topsoil is gone, the productivity of the land is usually gone; then the people who depend on that land have poorer diets and a lower standard of living. That is why the conservation of our good land is important to everyone. Here are some facts and figures about the land that's left how we can use it and still save it. Excerpt from Gallowglass: Or Life in the Land of the Priests But, des ite those serious studies of the most diffi cult of Irish problems, the reader must not be sur rised to find a substantial vein of humour and Irish evity running all through this book, which, indeed, would not be a true picture of Irish life if it were wanting in that respect. Roland Glenpower is typical of a class of Irishman which has not yet uite disappeared, though one seldom encounters now ays that reckless love of sport and practical joking for which Ireland was at one tim0 so famous. Excerpt from Everyday Life in the Holy Land Thirdly, this life is absolutely uniform. From the far South of Egypt to the far North Of Syria all things are alike. Every piece Of furniture, every agricultural or horti cultural implement, every manufacture, the building and arrangement Of every house - all is Of one pattern. Every work Of the same kind is done everywhere in the same way. Variety is charming is a Western proverb which the Orient utterly repudiates. The spirit Of the East calls, in all things, for a stereotyped and monotonous uniformity. If you have seen one pattern of inkpot, pen, table, coffee cup, brazier, ewer and basin, shirt, Cloak, girdle, head-dress, footgear, you have seen all. NO different modes, no passing fashions, change, or ever have Changed, the primitive features of Pales tine life. To Western minds, and in an age like ours, this seems little less than a standing miracle. Thus wonderfully has the power and goodness Of God afiorded us, through out the lands Of the Bible, a living, accurate, exhaustive, divinely preserved commentary on its inspired pages! Excerpt from The Land We Live In: Or the Story of Our Country In dealing with the late war I have sought to be just to both the Union and the Confederacy. The lapse of over thirty years has given a more accurate perspective to the events of that mighty struggle, in which, as a soldier-boy of sixteen, I was an obscure participant, and all true Ameri cans, whether they wore the blue or gray, now look back with pride to the splendid valor and heroic endurance displayed by the combatants on both sides. Those who belittle the constancy and courage of the South belittle the sacrifices and successes of the North. Excerpt from The Land We Live In: The Book of Conservation It is peculiarly appropriate that Mr. Price should have written this book. His experience has been exactly what he needed to fit him for the task. Mr. Price is a forester, and was for many years my right hand in the Forest Service. Indeed, if credit could be al lotted justly for work done, I believe it would be found that he had more to do with the success of the Service than I had. In addition to his intimate knowledge of the whole country acquired in the Forest Service, Mr. Price has been associated with the Conservation movement from its very beginning. It was with him that I discussed it first after the idea had occurred to me, and from that time to this little has happened in Conservation which has not profited by his wide knowledge, remarkable powers of organization, and unusual executive ability. As a member of the National Conservation Commission, Secretary of its Section of For ests, and once more the right hand of its Chairman, and as vice-president of the National Conservation Association, he has had and has used to the full an unrivaled opportunity to apply the foresight and training he acquired in Forestry to all phases of Conservation. His scientific accuracy is the guarantee for the accuracy of this book. Personally, Mr. Price is so warm a friend of mine that what he says about me in his book must be taken with many grains of salt. He is strongly prejudiced in my favor. I hope this admirable book may have what it deserves; the widest circulation among the young people of America. All the boys and girls who read it while they are young will be more useful to the Nation because of it when they grow up: and unless I am mistaken, they will thoroughly enjoy reading it besides.
