Our Man In Belize written by Richard Timothy Conroy and has been published by St. Martin's Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-03-03 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

A settlement established by shipwrecked English sailors in 1683, Belize is now a country of wildlife refuges and spectacular snorkeling reefs. Conroy vividly and hilariously recounts his adventures in a very different Belize. Conroy admits in Our Man in Belize that his tales "have taken on a life of their own"--tales of disasters, for example, like the dinner party at which an Obeah witch doctor blew up the consulate oven, causing the suddenly bald cook to quit in mid-meal , and the equally unsettling occasion when huge tropical roaches, attracted by the gracious candlelight, plunged helplessly from the ceiling into the guests' bowls of gazpacho. He describes the unorthodox social mores of the town, whose bordello was a barely hidden enterprise of the town's most respectable citizen, and he brings to vivid life the charming Belize people and their ways. Conroy also recounts the tragedy of Hurricane Hattie, which killed four hundred people on Halloween Eve in 1961 and changed the Belize way of life forever. None of the cheerful chaos and disorganization was what Conroy expected when he arrived in this small Central American country with his wife and two daughters, to face some of the most bizarre experiences of day-to-day diplomatic life.

The wit and charm that marked Our Man in Belize enlivens Richard Timothy Conroy's new "diplomatic memoir," in a posting that couldn't have a more different location. But the wheels of lower-level diplomacy, it turns out, turn at the same rate whatever the setting. Plucked from the cost of Central America and put down in post-World-War II Vienna, land of Der Rosencavalier and whipped cream cakes, Conroy still was "not mentioned in dispatches" (or at least, not complimentary ones) but even a lowly vice-consul could do some good in people's lives. Take, for example, his effort to help a woman flee Vienna after she reported that someone was sneaking into her room and slicing off a bit of her foot each night. Or the unfortunate Austrian whose visa application had been rejected three previous times, with no explanation. Conroy discovered that there was a picture of the man in a Red Army sergeant's uniform. Turned out the man had conned a gullible Red Army soldier to lend him the uniform for a snapshot, and an equally gullible group of Russian border guards that he was an undercover Red agent posing as (what he really was) an export-import businessman. Nobody before Conroy had bothered to ask for an explanation. In between similar tales of deep diplomatic deed and misdeed, the author gives his readers an imitable take on the Vienna of those days. Want to buy a second-hand piano? Some inexpensive paintings? How about -- above all -- that famous Viennese food and beer? You could have found it there with Conroy as your guide; failing that, his account of those days is just as rewarding and not nearly as fattening.

This text contains the life and times of Antonio Lorenzo Vega Sr., of Caye Caulker, Belize. It documents the life of a man who raises himself from poverty through sheer hard work at sea. Suddenly, after leading his village to remarkable success, Tony suffers the loss of his career at the very hands of those whom he has elevated. Tony is handed a second chance at recovery when a steady stream of backpackers forces him to open up his property to campers. Besides managing his hotel, Tony continues to enhance his community through his leadership. Caye to Success also shares the inside story of the formation of Belizes first fishing cooperative with the public. It describes the times surrounding this happening and how Tony Vega Sr., led a group of about three dozen islanders to join him in forming this organization. Today, this cooperative makes it possible for lobster-lovers the world over to experience a taste of Belize with a simple visit to the Red Lobster Restaurants in the United States. Reviews: Kamela Palma Chairperson National Council on Ageing Punta Gorda, Belize, Central America December 2003 Caye to Success for me as a Belizean, tells the history of one of our islands through the life of a gentle man and one of our countrys visionaries. The book spans the years from 1916 to today and relates a story of struggle, survival and achievement as experienced by Mr. Antonio Vega Sr., his parents, his wife and his children. It tells a tale of Belizes own struggle for modernization as experienced through the microcosm of this particular small island as it comes to grips with the riches of the sea and the harnessing of those riches for the betterment of the Caye Caulker community and of our beloved jewel. Mati has undertaken what so many of us with parents whose histories have shaped our communities and our country should do. I admire the honesty with which she weaves her tale and I admire the fact that she has had the courage to write this book. It is my sincere hope that all Belizeans will read this book and be inspired by it as I have been. ^^^^^^^^^^^^ James A. Sylvanus G Morley (1883-1948) is widely known as an influential Mayan archaeologist. This intriguing book shows that he was arguably the greatest American spy of World War I. Morley came to the attention of the Office of Naval Intelligence in 1916, when reports that German agents were establishing a Central American base for submarine warfare first surfaced. Morley's field research provided the ideal cover for reconnoitring throughout the region. He made several extended research/intelligence-gathering trips along the Caribbean coast of Central America starting in 1917 and forwarded detailed reports and maps to ONI. While he found no noteworthy German activity, his activities permit the authors of this book to reconstruct the way ONI identified, recruited, placed, and debriefed field agents, nearly 150 of whom, many with academic ties, were funnelling data to ONI by the close of World War I. In a final chapter, Sadler and Harris extend the story of academic participation in intelligence work through the 1930s into the founding of 'Wild Bill' Donovan's Office of Strategic Services (OSS) at the beginning of World War II.

The British Empire, one of the most powerful forces in history, was also one of the most humane. Yet at its twilight, few were willing to defy the anti-colonial reaction that condemned millions to despotism under the regimes that replaced it. Sir Alan Burns was among them. In this lively and provocative work of history, Bruce Gilley vindicates Sir Alan’s view that decolonization was poorly managed and too swiftly executed, a view based not on imperialist nostalgia but on a sober assessment of the ravages of the twentieth century. Gilley demonstrates that Burns understood the benefits of colonial rule and correctly foretold the chaos that accompanied its rapid dissolution. Relying on previously unavailable documentation from Burns’s family, The Last Imperialist dethrones the revisionist historians and shatters their unbalanced accusations against European colonialism. This is history writing at its most courageous.
