Excerpt from Our Martyred President Our Martyred President. With aching heart in grief-toned words I tell How Lincoln lived and labored, how he fell, And, in the zenith of his pure renown, Laid off his mortal robes to wear a crown Amid the radiant host of those who died That Freedom might o'er all our land preside. As some sweet lamb, that, by the placid lake, Where the light zephyrs tiny dimples wake, Thought him secure and safe from every harm, So rested we, and dreamed that War's alarm Would sound aloud through this fair land no more, Startling the echoes shrill from shore to shores; But, as the lamb who sought the osiered brink Peacefully there its thirst to slake, would drink, But saw reflected in the limpid wave The wolf, approaching him to swift enslave, And having captured, then to slay and eat, Starts from the lake-side, and with nimble feet Runs bleating up the hill-path toward the fold, Thus had we hoped to quaff the nectar pure Of victory which rendered peace secure, About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Our Martyred President: A Sermon Delivered in the First Congregational Church of Manistee, Mich., On the Sabbath Following the Death of Garfield Thus came the thirty- fourth ballot. And when the name of the last State, that of Wisconsin, was called, the chairman of her delegation declared that sixteen of her twenty votes were cast for James A. Garfield. The announcement was received, not only with the universal applause with which the Convention's favorite orator had been greeted whenever he had spoken, but also by an added electric thrill, which boded the beginning of the end. Excerpt from Life of William McKinley, Our Martyred President: With Short Biographies of Lincoln and Garfield, and a Comprehensive Life of President Roosevelt The personal love of the author and editor of this work for President McKinley is one of the main reasons which has impelled him to give it to the public. For many years he was acquainted with the President chiefly through a common relationship as army comrades. His respect, well-nigh bordering on reverence, for Major McKinley, has been heightened by increasing years. There was a steady growth in beauty of feature and in wisdom and power as advancing positions of trust came to this illustrious man. He with the upward rose and with the vastness grew. Every "king becoming grace of character" was found in him and was expressed in new and striking forms as occasion arose. The magnificent eulogies which have been pronounced upon him, touching every phase of his many-sided, matchless life, were "but dull beside the truth." The wonderful funeral accorded him, unprecedented in the world's history, attests the hold he had upon the hearts of his countrymen, and the spontaneous tributes of respect from all quarters of the globe, evinced the well-nigh universal esteem with which he was regarded. All that tongue or pen or art can do to perpetuate his memory and widen the knowledge of his life and services is the just demand of the American people. His life was gentle, and the elements So mix'd in him that nature might stand up And say to all the world, "This was a man!' Excerpt from Poets' Lincoln: Tributes in Verse to the Martyred President Although they are chiefly the productions of American authors, quite a number are from the pens of appreciative citizens of other countries. From the thousand of meritorious poems which have been written about Lincoln, the compiler, after serious consideration, has selected those within as appearing to be gems; although there were others which he would have been glad to include if space permitted.
