Excerpt from Our Travels Round the World, 1892-94 On a raw, foggy, gloomy afternoon we left the sw. India Docks on the top of the tide, I suppose, for if we had not left then we were told we could not have got out for ten days or a fortnight; we had a large general cargo, and a great deal of railway iron, and a steam pinnace as a deck passenger, going out for the Government of Western Australia, which made us roll a great deal. We had about thirty saloon passengers, some of them intending to stick to the ship all round the world. I believe they paid about 70, which for at least four months' voyaging was not much, being under 128. A day, a very fair table being kept, and good claret and whiskey to be pur chased at reasonable rates; there was also capital beer. We paid for ourselves, a party of three, with an excellent cabin (off the saloon) and a good ladies' cabin for the young ladies, 100 guineas, which for fifty days was very moderate but I happened to know the charterers. Excerpt from Around the World It requires six days to reach San Francisco from Toronto, and although the scenery is grand, the journey becomes rather wearisome. I was reminded of the story of an Englishman and American who were travelling together over the continent. The American said to the Englishman, Well, what do you think of our country, anyway The Englishman pondered for a time, and at last replied, Well, I think it is large. Excerpt from Impressions of a First Tour Round the World in 1883 and 1884: Embracing Travels in Europe, the United States of America, Canada, Japan, China, the Straits Settlements, and the Northern Portions of India AT the earnest solicitations of many valued friends, both in England and in India, who have expressed an interest in my first tour round the world during the years 1883 and 1884, I make my first adventure in authorship. I have complied, not without some misgivings, knowing my inability to completely realize all that may be expected of me. The Travels Of Dean Mahomet written by Dean Mahomet and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-11-10 with History categories.

This unusual study combines two books in one: the 1794 autobiographical travel narrative of an Indian, Dean Mahomet, recalling his years as camp-follower, servant, and subaltern officer in the East India Company's army (1769 to 1784); and Michael H. Fisher's portrayal of Mahomet's sojourn as an insider/outsider in India, Ireland, and England. Emigrating to Britain and living there for over half a century, Mahomet started what was probably the first Indian restaurant in England and then enjoyed a distinguished career as a practitioner of "oriental" medicine, i.e., therapeutic massage and herbal steam bath, in London and the seaside resort of Brighton. This is a fascinating account of life in late eighteenth-century India—the first book written in English by an Indian—framed by a mini-biography of a remarkably versatile entrepreneur. Travels presents an Indian's view of the British conquest of India and conveys the vital role taken by Indians in the colonial process, especially as they negotiated relations with Britons both in the colonial periphery and the imperial metropole. Connoisseurs of unusual travel narratives, historians of England, Ireland, and British India, as well as literary scholars of autobiography and colonial discourse will find much in this book. But it also offers an engaging biography of a resourceful, multidimensional individual.
