A generation of ordinary young men and women were thrust into the most extraordinary of situations when the Second World War was declared. Sussex is full of war heroes, but soon they will be gone – along with their stories. This is not a book about Victoria Cross winners or the celebrities of days gone by, but the untold accounts of everyday heroes who 'did their bit'. It is about former train engineer Bob Morrell, who was beaten, starved and tortured in the brutal Japanese prisoner camps. It is about ex-pub landlord John Akehurst, who gave the Germans the run-around Northern Europe after being shot down. And it is about Shindy Perez and her remarkable escape from the gas chambers of Auschwitz. As this important period passes from living memory into history, this is likely to be the last time that these personal tales are told, tales which should never be forgotten.

War Heroes describes the Tales of Adventure, Adversity and Heroism of veterans from World War II. World War II was perhaps the single greatest tragedy and triumph in all of human history! For most of these veterans, the War was the seminal experience in their lives. Every one of these War Heroes is disgusted by war-by the greed and hunger for power that causes war, and how the lives of our youth are sacrificed to feed this hunger. They are sickened by the devaluation of human life, and the endless suffering that war causes. However, when a true enemy menaced and threatened our existence, these peaceful men stood up and offered their lives for our defense. These men did not fight because of an aggressive nature, but rather because of their honour, their selflessness, and their heroic character. For most of us born after the War, there can be no true appreciation of what our parents and grandparents experienced. While Canadians on the Home Front made a great many sacrifices, and did their best for the War Effort, the real heroes were those men and women who traveled overseas to battle the enemy. At its most basic level, it is contrary to one's survival instincts to put oneself in 'harms way'. But for heroes, such as those in this book, there is a recognition of the need to act unselfishly in the interests of others. It has to be remembered that a hero is not a "fearless" person, but rather someone who acts in spite of his or her fears. All of us enjoying the peace and prosperity over the last sixty-five years owe a great gratitude to these heroes, who 'stood up' for our defense and way of life. Without their heroic fight against the Axis powers, our lives would have been much different. They helped protect the Canadian way of life, and prevented the expansion of a fascist world.

In the heat of battle, you see it... ...two grenades landing at the feet of your fellow Marines. There's no time to think. In a blink, you're on top of both of them to save others. Your time on earth is surely over... ...or is it? This is just a snapshot of the many heroes whose stories are collected in this book. Men who go above and beyond the call of duty and somehow manage the impossible. In this book you will discover: One soldier who exchanged his rifle for a shovel to save his comrades A man, against all odds, who went head to head against three tanks A young lad who lied his way into the corps just to see battle A dentist who did more for his country than pull teeth Soldiers who fought two fronts during the war (an aggressive enemy on the battle and racial discrimination everywhere else) A cook who single-handedly defended a town against a hoard of enemy troops and tanks. Interesting facts about each hero and their lives. And much more. Each hero is vividly depicted to truly bring their stories to life, whether they fought during Pearl Harbor, in the European Theatre, or the Pacific Campaign. Also included in the book are interesting facts about the war including: An iconic company that literally set up shop overseas to get their beloved products into the hands of the soldiers fighting on the front line A special weapon made by the Japanese that actually managed to strike American soil well after the attack on Pearl Harbor (which hardly anyone knows about). The famous American whose picture was framed on Hitler's desk The secret spy ring that was headquartered way too close to home And plenty more. You will discover how some of these heroes pulled off the impossible, accomplished more than entire squadrons could manage, and others who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country and the men they served. All the stories are small, bite-sized chapters that you can dive into and finish in no time. You will walk away inspired, amazed, and in awe of the greatest generation only after struggling to put down the book. Buy your copy now.

World War II was the defining event of the twentieth century. For everyone it was a time of confusion, fear, destruction, and death on a scale never before seen. Much has been written of the generals, campaigns, and battles of the war, but it was young, ordinary American kids who held our freedom in their hands as they fought for liberty across the globe. Forgotten Heroes of World War II offers a personal understanding of what was demanded of these young heroes through the stories of rank-and-file individuals who served in the navy, marines, army, air corps, and merchant marine in all theaters of the war. Their tales are told without pretense or apology. At the time, each thought himself no different from those around him, for they were all young, scared, and miserable. They were the ordinary, the extraordinary—the forgotten.
