Excerpt from Outdoors in Georgia, Vol. 2: October 1973 Living quarters for the squirrel tribe consist of two main types. Hol low den trees furnish the necessary protection during the winter months and often the first litters of the sea son are born there in early spring. In the summer, squirrels construct cool leaf nests which are often little more than wads of leaves stuffed into the fork of a branch. Some leaf nests are more elaborate, with an opening lead ing to an interior compartment. This type of nest is often used during mild winter weather in the south. Excerpt from Outdoors in Georgia, Vol. 5: February, 1976 The bird that never rests - that is the Indian name for the popular North American swallow better known as the purple martin. This bird is larger and more musical than any other member of the swallow family, including the time-honored swallows of Europe and Asia. Since Biblical and mythological times, swallows have been cherished as harbingers of spring. Their grace ful flight and sociable ways, and, more especially, their ability of knowing the time of their coming, has attracted man's attention since the dawn of civilization. Excerpt from Outdoors in Georgia, Vol. 1: July, 1972 Roads can play a large part in the initial destruction of a beautiful natural area. Constructed to make an area more accessible, these roads are environmentally damaging and eventually result in the deterioration of the high quality resources of the area through over-use. During the construction phase, the road building opera tion opens up scars on the landscape that on the infertile mountain soil are slow to heal, if they ever do. The cuts and fills necessary to maintain a relatively level road surface in mountainous terrain are hard to stabilize and may continue to erode and wash silt into the streams in the watershed for years afterward. A road has other, more subtle negative affects on the environment than those in the immediate road area. Roads prevent the normal movements of wildlife and bring heavy human access to bear in limited areas that cannot absorb it. Much of the lower slopes of Georgia's mountains have already met this fate and some sections now resemble a mountainous Coney Island. In several areas only the upper elevations and the main ridgeline still retain the wild quality and scenic beauty of a mountain wilderness. Excerpt from Outdoors in Georgia, Vol. 3: September, 1974 Two more of its kind came across the field, performing the same fluid aerobatics, to join the first bird. Two more came. Then six. Then a hundred, two hundred, a thousand. And still they came. The 10-year-old boy, watching with one hand holding a just - emptied slop bucket and the other resting on the split rails of the pig pen, moved a short distance and sat on a stump, fascinated. Just last Saturday (he remembered he and his Paw had hitched the mule and jolted down the mountain in the old wagon to Lafayette to barter some turnips for salt and sugar) he had heard that the birds were coming back. These were the first he had seen in nearly a year. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
